Topic: Image resizing options

Posted under General

I am trying to figure out how the two image resizing options work, since they don't seem to behave the way I expect them to.

First, Show image samples. This means the image downloaded is actually a smaller version of the original, correct?

Second, Resize images. This means the original image is downloaded to the user, but then resized by the browser, correct? I think this setting is a little buggy or less than intuitive, but maybe I'm just missing something. Let's use this image as an example:

I have Resize images enabled. Some observations:

  • When I first visit the page, the image has been resized, however the size of the image does not seem to take the sidebar (with all the tags) into account. This means big images always still scroll off the right edge of the page.
  • Clicking the image does not change the resize state. I would expect it to do the same action as clicking the "Resize image" link in the sidebar and this thread seems to suggest that it should.
  • When the "Resize image" link is clicked, the image cycles through two sizes: The original size and a smaller size that fits in the main content block of the page. The original Resize images account setting size is not included.
  • When Show image samples is enabled, clicking the "Resize image" link doesn't do anything.

Some specific questions:

  • Would it be possible to make the Resize images account option take the sidebar into account when resizing the image?
  • Should images resize when clicked on?

Just as a user, these two resizing settings seem very counter-intuitive and don't appear to work very well together (in fact they are almost mutually-exclusive, but the checkboxes can both be selected). Has there been discussion about simplifying/combining the resizing functionality?

Thanks :)

Well, clicking the image is already occupied with hiding and showing all notes, if available.

Show sample image normally shows the sample but scaled down to 800x700 or something like that, while resize image tries to scale it to the width of the window.

I believe Tony said that something with either sample or resize function isn't working as it should, but I can't remember what exactly isn't working the way it's supposed to be.
