Topic: A Question to any NCIS watchers...

Posted under Off Topic

So I'm on season 10 right now(we watch it through DVD's) and Gibbs mentioned Rule 38(Your Case, Your Lead), and that had me thinking... what would his Rule 34 be? It apparently has not come up on the show yet since it's not on the site, and I don't go on the CBS site or the Wikia for it at all anyways, I just looked up the rules. Just a funny and interesting question that came into my mind Lol Any ideas?

Yeah it hasn't been revealed yet, though now thanks to you I'm starting to wonder the same lol.

*scrambles around blindly* Bleach! For heaven's sake, where did I put that bleach!?

No, but seriously about the question. While I know this is begging for innuendo laden speculation, that's more Tony's style than Gibbs. Kinky would be more Abby's style than Gibbs. And I suspect Gibb's rule #34 is probably something more practical or mundane.

So, considering both the closest rules to it on the list which are known have to do with surveillance, I'd guess rule #34 might have something to do with surveillance or counter-intelligence. [Rule #27: Two ways to follow: First way, they never notice you, — second way, they only notice you." & "Rule #35: Always watch the watchers."] Because, although the rules don't always follow any themed order, it's as good a guess as any. And Gibbs has done some deep undercover work, so it would have been as good a time as any to formulate a few rules on it.

But then again, I wouldn't be shocked if one of his rules is about always having a cup of hot coffee on hand. He uses them to survive long case hours, sure. But he also uses his coffee to stall when he's been asked something he doesn't want to reveal. Or to change the subject. Or to cause suspenseful pauses in between questions while interrogating a suspect.

If you watch, he'll often use coffee as a prop for shifting the balance of power back into his court via making the other person wait, distracting from an issue with something so neutrally mundane, and taking an extra moment to collect his thoughts. Appearing so calm, cool, and collected. It gives him that added naturally dominant presence where you feel like he's a sleeping lion that you don't want to cross. It gives the impression he knows more than he's choosing to say, or that he holds more cards than he's showing. And it's very deliberately done. Any technique he's ingrained that far into habit has to be in one of his rules. It may not be #34 but my guess is it's in there somewhere.

Yea, you're right, it would fit Tony more to have an odd sex-related rule. And that seems to make sense to me(about the surrounding rules being about surveillance, etc.).

HINT TO WRITERS: Make this a joke in the show if it hasn't already been done! It sounds like something DiNozzo and McGee would be discussing at their desks Lol

Omg, that would make an awesome scene! You just know DiNozzo would speculate about any rules he doesn't know yet, McGee too. Though I suspect Abby somehow knows all of them, and is just as close-lipped about it as Gibbs is. lol

You know what I can also see Tony doing: spending a whole episode trying to guess what a certain rule is, because it's the only one he hasn't been able to figure out yet. And so he keeps popping guesses in at appropriate moments in the investigation, or latching onto things Gibbs says, asking if any of them are it. And Gibbs of course just tolerating it but not giving anything away, just telling him to stick to business. And then in the end it turns out to be something mundane. But Tony's suggestions would be hilarious. And ample room for some subtle character commentary on Gibbs's habits. It'd make a decent episode gimmick. And it's entirely something I could see Tony doing.
