It seems to have a square saying "blacklisted" below every person's name? Why is this? The only thing I have ever blacklisted is posts and not users.

Check your user settings ( https://e621.net/user/edit ) and uncheck the "Apply blacklist to avatars" option.

Oh, we have avatars now! I have switched that off. Where do I upload my own?

Upload? Do you mean set an image as your avatar?

Basically, click on an image, then to the left, under some other things, you'll see something that says "Set post as avatar". Click on that, and voila! :3

That sounds like a good idea, but now I'm not sure which one to use. Any ideas?

That's your decision now :3, you can pretty much use any post you like as an avatar.
