A post I uploaded was deleted with the reason "unauthorized edit".

I found this to be odd since there are 50 pages worth of posts tagged 'edit' and I'm fairly certain the majority of them are not "authorized". I've made shameless edits before and it hasn't been a problem. I thought perhaps the original artist (scappo) had requested edits of his work to be removed, but the rules and DNP list don't say anything about that. Plus, there are a dozen other edits of his work on here.

Now, I'm not mad and I know mods have pretty much free reign when it comes to deleting things. I'm just confused by the reason "unauthorized edit". If it had said e.g. "poor/unnecessary edit" I would have understood. The fact the post had already been approved just makes it weirder.

Am I missing something here?

Going to take a guess and say the artist put in some take down request or something flagged the image the reason "Edits to my art without permission aren't welcome. Please stop editing my art without my consent." for you not asking them to edit the image.....just a guess.

edit: My guess was close enough... I had a feeling they flagged it and didnt put in a proper take down request...

Oh well. Would be nice if there was a "Do Not Edit" list in addition to the DNP list, so you don't have to find out the hard way. It might not have been a big change, but as slow as I am it took me about three hours to do...

Or you could ask the artist before editing the images? I mean, wouldnt that be easier? Why not just ask before editing?

Pretty much the same reasons as for having a DNP:

1. It's easier to Ctrl-F a list than to contact every artist.
2. The artist only needs to be added to the list once. They don't need to be asked/bothered by every single editor.
3. Not every artist is easy to contact.
4. If you have a public list then a mod can just point to it if something not allowed is posted.

DNP and asking to edit are two different things.

Some artists are okay with some edited images as long as you ask.

Some artists are okay with you editing images as long as you ask, but dont want you to edit the image of some rabbit herm jerking off.

We cant list every one of these images as expectations and somehow keep this list updated. Besides simply asking the artist will stop any of these problems. No list is needed.

A list would still be nice, but it'd be incredibly hard to maintain, which is primarily why we don't do it.

Further, it's not an e6 policy "go ask before you edit stuff", it's a common sense concept. Unless you're editting the image sufficiently that it is mostly your work and not someone else's, it falls under the derived work clause of copyright law rather than fair use and you can be dinged for it every time. It just makes everything work better if you just simply ASK before going ahead with something like this rather than try to maintain a "easier to apologize later than ask permission in advance" mentality.

I knew this was going to happen when I saw the artist flagging it. (Supposedly, the artist had to submit a takedown request but I guess an admin made an exception) All you have to do is ask for permission to edit their art. If they say no, then respect their decision and if they say yes, go for it. Unfortunately for you, certain artists don't like when people edit their art that took a long time to make (Scappo, Walter Sache, etc.). That and sometimes character owners and commissioners don't like it either. Moral of the story: Ask first, it's not hard.

Don't edit my artwork is a more universal thing, we shouldn't have to maintain a list for the whole internet.
