Basically a gif is a looping image, animated is something that has multiple frames of an image in general, if I am not mistaken.

So that's saying an animated image will always be a gif, so post #21076 is a gif, which is certainly not the case.

It should be an implication from gif to animated instead.

What about animated png? Will those be supported here? Lossless like png is.

gif = animated but animated =/= gif, and the search type:gif replaced the need for the tag

Assuming that people who tag 'gif' are referring to the animated kind;
How about aliasing gif to animated gif, and implicating animated_gif -> animated?

That way, we can still use animated for animated pngs, if it ever becomes a tag

(And probably implicate animated_png -> animated)

Which leaves us with:

alias gif -> animated_gif

implicate animated_gif -> animated

And the optional ones:

create animated_png

implicate animated_png -> animated

apng exists for animated pngs (though there's only 3 images with that tag)

Regardless, we don't need to break it down into technical aspects. People were tagging gif to refer to the animated type, not the file type, so it was aliased to animated.

animated_png implies animated

These are all unnecessary; if you need the animated type, try animated, if you need the looping kind we have loop, and if you need the file type that is .gif then we have type:gif, type:swf, etc
