Honestly? I wish Gay Pride would go away. Not having pride in yourself, but god damn the parades and the "HELL NO WE WON'T GO" chant are just annoying. Yeah, you're gay. Congrats. Don't need to shove it in everyone's face. :x Many good friends who are gay and don't do it, why do so many still feel like they need to do so?

As someone who lives in the worlds friendliest LGBT country, Sweden, I'm fairly sure the yearly Gay Pride parades creates more anti-gay opinions than there were before. I mean, I've talked to people who didn't mind gay people being gay until they started walking down main street in makeup and leather fetish gear, kissing and yelling stuff about being gay as hell.
So basically it's chill to be gay, just don't rub it in others faces. Being gay doesn't mean your better OR worse than anyone else, just that you enjoy the D.
Now someone cue the why can't we be friends music

The painful thing is, unless you look like a fag, walk around hand in hand with another guy OR wear leather fetish rainbow gear you are simply not perceived as homosexual person.
That way heterosexual people are unable to make "normal" or positive experiences with gay people and only connect all the deviancy they see at "pride festivals" with gay people.
At this point I am pretty open with my homosexuality and just tell anyone I meet if the slightest opportunity opens up.
All of them are like "You aren't gay, stop joking around, you don't really act that gay at all!".
When I ask them, most of them don't have any gay acquaintances. They can't believe that people they perceive as "normal" are actually gay which is very sad in my eyes.
Personally I feel like the ambassador of the homosexual people stranded in the heterosexual sea and constantly try to have a rough but serious attitude and appearance to show that not all of us (and especially myself) are gay without being faggots.

In a rare occurrence, I agree with you (I kid).
I am Bi myself, but naked people being retarded in a parade hinders the last year of progress. Seriously, it's 2 steps forward and 1 or 2 steps back depending how stupid the gay pride events go

What is non-heteronormative behavior? How does somebody 'act straight' in public?
The logical approach says it is the opposite of what the norm of all heterosexual people do.
If we consider now that most straight people in public simply do their thing without trying to bother others we come to the conclusion that you like to get up in other people's businesses and bother everybody.
Also known as general douchebag behavior.
Alas, I doubt you mean that so an explanation of what that clusterfuck of a word is supposed to mean would be highly appreciated.

Why would someone be proud of something they were born with? You didn't work towards achieving "gayness" I see no reason to be proud of it. One can feel proud if they worked at a homeless shelter, or worked as a firefighter, because that is something that requires work. This is just as bad as excessive patriotism, with a nations residents being proud of something they had neither say, nor taken a part in.

I'm gay. I live in London, England - one of the most gay-friendly cities you'll find. And I too am not very fond of gay pride.
Now, I'll prefix this by saying there are some places where gay pride parades are completely needed. Generally, it's places where gays face persecution. In more liberal places, it's easy to forget the majority of the world see gays as unnatural, even criminal.
But in London...? Let me tell you about the last gay pride I went to.
Pride in London is a pretty big deal. Hundreds of thousands turn up, there's parade floats, singers, the gay heart of London Soho (which shares a border with the red light district) is completely festooned with rainbow flags, stalls. You know. The works.
Now the parade is, depending on the time of day, easily a mile long. I was at where the front was going to be in maybe 10 minutes at the top of Oxford street. The sidewalks has these metal gates either side to... well, that was the question, wasn't it? Why were these gates along the entire length of the parade route? I found a gap places to allow traffic through and headed towards the parade, whereupon I was grabbed by some guy wearing an orange jacket and shoved back past the gate.
"I'm meant to be in the parade!" I said
"No, you go to the back." He said, pointing to wards marble arch, one mile away.
It's worth mentioning that streets in the UK - even main roads - are considerably more narrow than ones in the US, but no less populated. And today they were rammed full of people. I considered arguing, but it was fairly clear that it was a no-win situation. So, sighing, I made my way through the crowds.
I could see the parade go past of course as I was going the other way. Most of the floats were corporate sponsors all eager to show off how progressive they are. But as I walked, something became horribly clear to me...
I saw one excitable middle age woman smiling and pointing at people as they went past on the floats.
"Oh look at that one! Look at you! You're so beautiful!" she squealed.
I looked at the others and there was a lot of similar actions going on. Lots of cameras, and people with amused, puzzled expressions.
Everyone straight was on one side of the barriers, everyone gay was on the other. No mixing allowed. It felt less like a parade and more like a zoo.
As I contemplated this, there was a parade float representing the bondage and leather fetish scene. I looked at the many children who were also watching. Normally I lean towards parents taking responsibility for what their kids are watching, but Oxford street is vast and in the middle of the city. If a parent didn't want their kid to be checking out the people with whips and leather harnesses, what choice did they have?
Who is this really helping? What kind of pride is demonstrated here?
'These are the gays! Here's what gays look like! Look at their funny clothes!' it seemed to say.
I stopped going after that. I'm proud of who I am, and my sexuality is only a small part of that. The only other people who let their sex life define them are misogynists.
If the day comes I talk to a person who has a problem with homosexuality, I'll talk about it. What I won't do is wear a pink tank-top, adopt a high pitched voice and limp my wrist. That does the exact opposite of what I want to achieve.
If you want to make a point, make a point. If you just want an excuse to have a party, have a party. Just don't confuse the two.

I have nothing against straight people, but I just wish those cuntfuckers don't show up their sexuality into others throats. I mean, you are straight, that's okay but for god's sake dress like a normal person not a cuntfucker, and behave like normal person. I'm a bi, and I think that this kind of people give me a bad image. I have a lot of straight friends that agree with me.

Dear Lord, how awful I can't think about anyone else who do such awful things as wearing not normal clothes and speaking about who they are aloud. We should take example from Arab countries and sentence them to 300 lashes.
Peekaboo said:
I'm bisexual and I have a problem with gay pride, and any other kinds of "I was born with it and therefore I can be proud of it" groups.
Of course it's similar, after all the risks of saying out load that you are <insert your nation here> are similar to risks of outing yourself as not heterosexual person. I remember known case when father beat up and throw away from house his son because he said that he was Canadian.
Peekaboo said:
Nope, not at all. I just dislike people ruining something for everyone, which pride parades are doing.
Yeah, those gay prides... you know what, fuck the sarcasm. I find funny those viewpoints that homo/bi/whateverphobic person would stop hate the group if that group would become more quiet. Here in Poland there were suggestion that we should fight for very limited, and humiliating civil unions for same-gender persons because otherwise other would see this as a threat for marriage. Guess what, after castrating suggestions of civil unions they still said that this is threat to marriage. They didn't even bother to read.
I'm sick of queer people thinking that they are some kind of faggot pinocchio and that if they were quiet enough then some kind of fairy would come and make you the real boy. Homophobia is not logical view, homophobia is a mental disease. You can't reason with something like that. So stop try to make everyone pretend to be the same as majority of straight people. Being yourself is not ruining anything.
With all that said of course that there are many thing wrong with recent Prides. There was Pride in San Francisco where Manning was banned. There was Judith Butler criticizing Prides. There are many good reasons to complain about how Pride works.
But to disregard whole idea because it ,supposedly, makes whole LGBTQF community look bad? Or because people wear strange clothes there? This is bullshit.

and then listen to your pride is about dressing in bondage gear complaints I have a feeling that your GPS gone wrong and by accident you got into BDSM club instead of Pride. Accidents happen but don't blame them on Pride.
More seriously "Pride is all about people in sexual outfit" fallacy is also largely used here in Poland, even when the Pride equivalents are much less colorful then in other countries. No matter how people dress in Pride there will still be people who claim that Pride is about people in BDSM outfits.

(the gays are to blame. Trust me; it's funny if you get it)
I think Gay Pride is something we need to have and stand up for but as most people say, maybe not project in the way it is in places where homosexuality is generally accepted.
I think we would get a fair bit on the way towards acceptance by getting people to understand that being gay/whatever is about liking people of the same sex/whatever, not necessarily just that thing they've got going on in their pants.
I usually present myself as biromantic or biamorous when the opportunity arises. It helps making people think of it the way they should be doing for them to realise why it's such a big deal.
Instead of projecting "oh god, please change your laaaaws~ I need to have your married uncle's penis in my bum, pls!"
They get "candle-lit dinner for two (oh, and btw we're gay)"
Just telling people that the word homoSEXUAL inadvertently leads people into thinking about wanting sex and completely missing the point of what it means, has helped me get along with lots of people that are proclaimed homophobiackers. (don't judge, I'm tired)
It sets a ground from which you can discuss your right to love instead of your right to put your dick where you please.
it's partly the same problem the furry fandom has had and still does to some degree. Being focused around sex.

To be fair the majority of the furry fandom is rife with sexualization to the point it is a recognizable facet of the fandom. The sexualization of gayness through the Gay Pride Parade where gays flaunt their sexuality in everyone's face and make that "need uncle's dick in bum pls" case look like it's true is most of the problem -now-. Back when it was condemned and gays were persecuted, yeah it was needed, to show that you were here and wouldn't go away, or whatever the slogan was. Now that gays are for the most part accepted (Note: Places where it's not, keep fighting!) that shit needs to get toned down. :x Yeah, we get that you're here to stay, but we don't need to hear it from the end of a loudspeaker when we don't care what sexuality you are anymore so long as that ain't my uncle's dick in your bum. Then it's personal. :P

Not the most unfriendly place - not even one of them. That said, places like Texas are in dire need of loud and open gay pride.
It's tempting to argue a person might be doing more harm than good that way. People will feel threatened, shake their heads and talk about the downfall of society. You already know this, I'm sure.
LGBTs aren't like african americans. A black person's racial statement is with them no matter where they go. It's obvious. A room could be full of gay people without you ever knowing because it's not something that shows - so the first step to the social acceptance of a group is acknowledging their existence. First people have to realise that gays are here and they won't go away by making them feel unwelcomed.
It's difficult, but you *are* doing the right thing. Just remember, if you find a moment where the persecution breaks, let them know that you're still the same people. That the knee high socks and tight clothes are just a statement and that underneath it, you WANT gays and straights to mix, hang out and interact without bullshit social undertones.
Because many of these people, when they realise fear is irrational, will abandon it. And like Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself."

I would like to make one point that is semi-relevant, and has been mentioned a couple times in the thread.
I'm more than a bit tired of the "they were born that way" reasoning.
Don't get me wrong, there are people who are born gay, and born straight, sure.
But, a) there are a lot of people who are born in the middle, and it diminishes the validity of our sexuality to treat it like a magic genetic switch that's either flipped on or off.
b) Who the hell cares if it's a decision, or a genetic predisposition, it's my life and it's no business of anyone else who I want to be with, choice or not.
tl;dr I fully support the right of anyone to be with anyone, regardless of anything.
