Lately I've noticed the background for the search box on the splash page has disappeared (as in first pic)... looks a bit ugly, but you can see the mascot behind it which I thought was a nice touch. So a couple CSS tweaks and a blurred, darkened (but perhaps not enough) version of the mascot image later... http://imgh.us/e621enhance.png

That CSS doesn't quite work (breaks when you scroll), but the concept is there.
