Topic: Selectively applying blacklist to avatars?

Posted under General

There's lots of art here on e6, and some of it is always going to be disliked by certain people. I've figured out how to use my blacklist to easily filter out images I don't care for, but there's a small problem. Avatars.

Now, I know there's a button to apply blacklist settings to avatars, but I don't want to get rid of ALL avatars. There are some images I'm ok seeing as avatars, but I don't really want showing up all the time when I'm surfing for porn.

Specifically, here's my problem. I have some blacklist stuff set up for MLP and Friendship is Magic. I search for equines fairly often, and I got tired of half of the images showing up being of cute little ponies doing pony things. Mind you, I like seeing some of the MLP porn, but I got tired of the flood of normal, SFW pony stuff. But, blacklisting this had an unexpected side effect. About half of the avatars around here are also MLP related, and usually fit within my SFW filter. That was annoying, since I really identify people with their avatars and usually like seeing them.

So I turned off the "apply blacklist to avatars" button for the past week or so. Theeeeen I ran into this post #6268 (Not Safe For Life, you've been warned) as an avatar. Yeah, I'd really rather not see that thank you very much.

Is there already a way to achieve this? Is this a feature anyone else would be interested in?

Add "id:6268" to it. Make sure it's on its own line. Works every time!!

And now the testimonies!

I love how I know exactly what image that is based on the ID number alone now (thanks Peekaboo :D).

That'll disable the notorious fender/grater image from showing up as an avatar, even if I don't have apply to avatars checked? Huh, useful.

Is there a way to do that for tag groups instead of singular images?

Put all tags on a single line, but I'm pretty sure you already know that.

Edit: Tag groups as in searches? Or what?

I mean if I have this as a single line in my blacklist: "my_little_pony rating:safe -anthro" is there a way to apply that blacklist line to searches, but NOT to avatars?

Or alternatively, is there a way to add certain lines from my blacklist to filter out avatars, while others lines don't? From what I can tell, it's all on, or all off when applying blacklist to avatars.

Unfortunately, no. You can't filter avatars.

Unfortunately right now you either don't blacklist avatars at all, or your whole post blacklist also applies to avatars. We'd like to improve this system in the future, but we're a very small development team (two volunteers right now) and we have a lot of other stuff we also need to do :(

Add something like a special metatag (":avatar:" or the like) and process it on the function that handles the blacklist, it might be a quick and dirty fix but I think it'll do for now
