If you see that after doing a tag search, there's no submissions that are tagged with it.

Pretty much. Or, I think, in the event of, say, looking at the last pages of a tag, it means that some submissions with that tag were deleted, yet the tag database(or whatever) still counts them. Whne you get it, it's unavoidable, Just move on. :)

there is nothing viewable, either you mispelled something, nothing REALLY is there... or we deleted it for one reason or another.

You need to be "Privileged" or up to see those pictures.
Example: search "mouse". Pages 31-34 are chickens.

No, it just means that there were 34 pages of mice, but currently there are only 31 (the others may have had the mouse tag removed, or more likely, they were deleted, but the database still thinks there's 34 pages worth of images.

Child posts also count towards the page number, but are hidden.
I think.

"Any post that has a parent will not show up in the main listing. However, the post will appear again if a user does any kind of tag search."

Actually, that got changed / broken along with the other stuff -- child posts now do show up on the main post listing.

I frankly never understood why they were hidden in the first place.

Well, I'm guessing the idea was that if an image with multiple 'equivalent' versions was posted, the set of pretty much the same image wouldn't block out like four spots in a row on the front page. Especially considering that the differences between some parent/child posts are small or subtle enough you wouldn't be able to notice them from the thumbnail anyways, it makes more sense (to me, anyways) to just show the 'main' image of the set.

hm.
"According to my stepfather who is 63 and a half, therefore a mine of information, it comes from an american sketch from something similar to The Little Rascals where one of the characters was running away from a certain figure of authority and hid in a chicken coop, when the pursuer got to the chicken house he shouted:
"Is there anybody in here?"
to which the fugitive replied:
"There's no-one here but us chickens" "
Tat's the best quote I can find on the matter. SOme peopel seem to attribute it to a song, but I"m pretyt sure these would predate the song.
I also found this on my search for the answer:
http://web.mit.edu/~ashultz/Public/Deadlands/Logs/01.html
which I found... itneresting XD
