Topic: Second Life Screenshots?

Posted under General

Now that the old leader has finally shouted his last Sieg Heil, what are we to do about the occasional Second Life screenshot? Are they still disallowed, or can I actually post some snapshots now?

I'm asking because of this that was recently posted.

Second Life screenshots are posted all the time. Very few of them actually get approved. None of them are received positively.

I don't mind the occasional screenshot, particularly if it's a custom avatar or presented in an artist manner ( post #76078 ), but I'd consider myself among the minority. I sincerely doubt that anyone is interested in your snarky "greifer" screenshots.

I recently had a long... very horrible.. very very horrible talk with a... very very horrible user about his... half decent SL shot.. he's no longer with us.

Let's say it this way. It's gotta not look like it was made in Second life for it to pass. :) Or at least pose some merit beyond the overly common 300 pictures of the same avatar doing generic move 7.

and your post is no longer among us.

I don't care as long as it's tagged, so we can blacklist it.

hitting printscreen is not making art.

I would argue, in that respect, photography isn't an art.

In both cases, any idiot can run around, and take lots of screenshots/photos.... but it takes a lot more effort and time to set up a good picture with artistic merit.

Take post #53198 for example.. The picture is relatively closely cropped, preventing huge amounts of 'wasted' space, the pose is something more then 'I'm standing here :D' and as I read the comments, the model is made up of several separate parts to form something more customize then I believe most screen shots from SL are.

All in all, it comes down to the individual image. To say that screenshots can't be art.. it's like saying you can't make art with crayons. or twist ties. or paper clips. it's all down to the artist. Thankfully, we have mods to wander through and delete the crap that is just 'lol look how murry my char is! :D"

you dont just take a random snapshot and call it art, or make random scribbles and call that art. people who do are just bullshiting you and if you take it from them what does that make you? like aurali said, put some work into it and make damn shure it doesn't look like shit.

As I said, anyone can run around and take photos or screenshots, but there's a world of difference between "Aunt Fanny, on the beach about 50 foot away from the camera, which is focusing on the old man's wrinkley back laying about halfway between the camera and Aunt Fanny" and, say "Hazy Autumn Dreamer". It all comes down to the individual work. Great photographers still discard roll upon roll of images, for every fine image by (insert your favorite furry artist here) there are pages of doodles and chicken scratch and accidental derp faces that will never see the light of a scanner :P

I'm not saying that every screenshot or scribble is 'art'.. but that art can be found in a number of mediums. :P

wheee, text. we're all saying the same thing, isn't it great?

Updated by anonymous

Well that 'was' posted a year ago, not sure what the policy on SL was back then.

Updated by anonymous

probably because it was meant as humor instead of a serious attempt at "art"

Like everything else, it's all on moderator discretion, and you know what.. it's fucking funny..

There seems to be some variation what gets approved, for example this video has been around some time:
http://e621.net/post/show/91395

But when tried to upload other very similar type videos, like these:
http://pawsru.org/flash/src/halloween.swf
http://pawsru.org/flash/src/Snowing.swf

They got deleted.

So..?

sad thing is, the person in the beginning is wearing a primitive belt, and their left "paw" is detached, showing the base avatar hand. XD

Honestly, I'd be fine with those movies on the site. Someone obviously put real time and effort into them, and they're not half bad for what they are.

They may be SecondLife, but they're a lot more than just "picture of my SL murrsona".

Undeleted.

Well i feel that Second Life is fine as long as you stay away from the vigilante groups like the JLU and such. And i consider the snapshots to be art.

I did try Second Life (thinking it was free, and like "The Sims"), but when I saw that you had to pay REAL money to buy properties, even in the demo, I said: "No way, no way at all."

Spending real money to have virtual money, so that you can spend that virtual money you just bought to buy a virtual business that will make you more virtual money...which you can exchange for real money, so that you can recuperate the startup cost of the virtual business and the real money you lost when you bought the virtual money that you used to make the virtual business in the first place...

...just makes no sense at all.

i like this better, i just let my computer run it while i camped for that fake money which i then used to buy a real poster from tailsrulz

I'd delete them because they are screenshots and nothing original.

Well i was diagnosed at a early age as being autistic,so i don't really know what people are thinking.

Well, it might be not really obvious, but Aurali was asking you not to start discussion about the first part of your post ("they are art though").

Actually I meant his SL drama he spreads around the internet... I've already dealt with it twice.

from what aurali has dug up, he really is that bad. and if this really is trollin, then it's terrible, no ones raging

I'm so tired of seeing Autism and Aspergers being used as an excuse for trollish behavior on the internet.

The "I don't understand because I have XYZ" certainly doesn't work on a thread were people are explaining their exact opinion, some of which is in great detail. If you're gonna try and make a go of it, at least understand the condition you're trying to emulate. Put a little effort into it!

Updated by anonymous

Fuck it. Forgive me the very extended rant on this.

WARNING! This may possibly be the longest, and TL;DR-est post EVER on this forum.

trolling ins't always about causing rage.

The definition of good trolling is to agitate (does not always imply anger) people without them being aware that they're purposefully being riled up. Some trolls use the blunt force method (example, coming onto a furry board and starting a FURSECUTIONOMG thread) while others go about it in much more subtle ways... (example, asking a question inspired by slightly incorrect information ('Why does zelda save the princess' would have been a good example before it got used into the ground)...

Here's what I see...

A person who enjoys getting people getting riled up. He comes on to a furry board, he makes an account, in august. He favorites about 30 things, uploads a pair of images and gives then minimal tags. He lets the account sit a while, to get a bit of age.

A month ago he starts asking for fursuit head makers. about 2 weeks ago, he voices an opinion against "vigilante groups" like JLU in second life, which he's in other places said he was proudly a part of.

He also starts his "why are we FURSECUTED on forums?" thread. His ONLY contributions in that thread are "sage" and "please lock this". He didnt' say anything to all the people who gave him serious and not serious answers.

Then, 2 days later "Why won't my family help me get a fursuit". He blames the CSI episode for making his family biased against him, and pretends to believe that furry art will change their mind. He then spins a story about being 33 year old, with a mother who controls his credit card.

If he's autistic, that could explain why he's living with his mother... but he doesn't address that at all when people go WHAT? at him, and instead mentions a few days later that he's not a troll, because he was part of the SL group gridwatch and called on the JLU and gridwatch for help. Wait, I thought they were vigilante groups to stay away from?

Then, he abandons the topic yet again and goes "Why are there no furries in hawaii??" --thus establishing his physical location in a place that has a very low furry population density (I should know--I was a 16 year old furry, and every local fur I tracked down online (all 3 of them) didn't answer email, or had already moved away.) AND is hard to get to in general without a significant sum of money. No one can say "Hi! I'm passing through your area, let's get together and have lunch!" when you're on an island. He never has to encounter anyone face to face. His replies devolve into "I was part of an anti troll group in SL" and "why are you fursecuting me??" and... drops it again.

Then, to 'change topics' he starts a 'classic rock' thread.... contributes to another music thread, (and this is when he posts his 'please lock this post" message) very normal posts... then turns around and gets back into the second life thing again, and starts this stuff again.

Okay. So.. TL;DR - starts an account, seems to make a show of "pathetic' traits, starts trollish threads, and establishes his physical location as far out of reach for most people, while seeming to carefulyl tread on this side of a ban.

Okay. "But Snowwolf," you say, "if you google axelfox, you can find other traces of his existance on the interwubs!"

true!

which is why *I* think Axelfox is a troll persona, not jsut a e621 troll.

Let's see what I've trolled up on the internet. His FA accounts'
a year old.

This facepunch thread is the best, though.. he starts a lifestyle thread about wearing a tail in public (his name here btw is axelyiffyfox). The first reply is, basically, troll. He starts up his "i'm no troll, I belong to JLU and gridwatch!" spiel again. (including the fun phrase "I belong to a vigilante group known as gridwatch" (oh those vigilante groups.. )... he goes on for several posts abuot how he's not a troll...

here's a fun quote "Furries can not be trolls" and "I was diagnosed at an early age with autism and aspergers"

Wait, what?

No.

It doesn't work that way. Autism and Asperger's are either the same thing, or totally different. You CANNOT be both at once.

Asperger's is in the same "family" of disorders as autism. In fact, they're called the autistic spectrum disorders. They are an array of psychologically conditions characterized by abnormalities in social interactions and communication. Very commonly, highly repetative behavior and severely restricted interests ("obsessions") are also part of these disorders. But having one does not make you autistc. Autism is one disorder. Asperger's is another. There are 3 more, that, like autism and Asperger's have very different criteria for diagnosis.

For example, people with Aspergers acquire language skills at a normal time; however, they learn to use language in an 'atypical' manner. They are given to misunderstand and be over literally in their understanding, their metaphors may only make sence to them, and their speech patterns are often regarded as pedantic, and formal. They use odd pitch, intonation and rythem while communicating. They may be very verbose, and have a sophisticated, if overly literal vocabulary. Please compare this to an autistic child. Speach development is delayed, their baby-babbling is less diverse and less frequent. Many Austistic children will never develop enough speech to "meet their daily communication needs".

Okay. back to my rambling. So Axel here goes "poor me, I have two conflicting disorders!" and he's told "That doesn't work here. Don't try to use it as an excuse." So he replies, I quote "Fursecution!!!"

Someone offers him a vaguely "I dont' think he's a troll" reply and hes' all "I wish there was a furmeet in hawaii.. look, here's a picture of my tail and ears!" The threa diverges off for a while until Axel pops back in with a picture of a main in a wolf shirt with a tail on. Then another image of a man with a tail, displaying his ass towards the camera while standing on the bumper of a VW Fox, with Cali plates reading 'yiff toy' and a bumper sticker that says 'honk if you feel yiffy". None of the tails were his BTW. :P

It goes on.. but he's not even taking it seriously, randomly spouting 'fursecution' and "But should belonging to a antigriefer group give me immunity? Because i was dianosed at a early age with being autistic. Why are you being mean to someone with a disablity?"

So someone asks "high functioning autistic?" (A legitimate question as some autistics do "function' more effectively then others.) His reply is "Why are you hating me for being a furry?" They reply "why are you accusing me of hating you? I just asked a question." "I was even enrolled in the special olympics a long time ago." It goes on and on and I won't continue belaboring the point, except to mention he comes back a few pages later under a different user name and claims to be Axel's mate.

*exhale*

so.. tl;dr -- This guy is a troll. a very elaborate troll. But why not? The best trolls are ones that you're not sure if they're trolls or not. So why NOT make a persona and make profiles and make a 'history' for him on the internet? All of his usernames are close to his original, so you can easily daisy chain them together so that they look like they're TRYING to evade google. it's fucking beautiful. ED wants an article on him, he's riled up several long pages of threads around the internet.. and all for... what? a bit of time every few months? making a few accounts and letting them sit... 2 cheap art commissions, and a cheapo forum for 'hawaii furs' that seems to get no traffic at all. And he gets a flurry of people going "no, he isn't a troll" and "yes he is" when there would be no doubt if he'd started his account last tuesday.

the worst bit is, there's at least one legitimate 'axelfox' out there. There's a guy from germany, and a dude who seems to have been on the anandtech forums for 12 years.

Anyway. I've put too much damn time into this already. maybe I shouldn't post this, but I'm tired of this guy's posts, and dragging my home state's name through the mud.

*lumbers away into the crabby cave*

I still stand by the idea that this guy is just trolling and I really hate that he's trying to use the autism card to try and fuck with people. Know too many peopel wuth Autism,/Asperber's and other disorders to find any 'amusement' in someone making light of it.

Oops, there I go again. hhmmm.. internet vacation time! where's that book I was reading.. *wanders away*

There's no doubt in my mind that this assessment is completely true. However, I don't think that he's nearly as successful you might think. Especially not here on e6, where he was dismissed from the get go. He's certainly not worth all the time and attention he's getting over it.

Now go get yourself some echinacea and a nice mug of hot tea. Hope you feel better soon.

Well i do suffer from Aspergers and my definition of a troll is someone who uses insulting language or insults others,i never did any of that. How can i be a troll if i didn't insult anyone?

Of course i'm also waiting on a fursuit to arrive that i won.

And i was in Special Olympics a long time ago.

Why is everyone hating me?

The reason the site is so empty is because most advertising is too expensive,i called a newspaper about their classifieds and they said it's $100,when the ad for listing in classifieds said it's only $25,talk about false advertising.
