Topic: General Gaming Thread

Posted under Off Topic

Since there seemed to be sufficient interest in just discussing games and consoles in general when it was suggested on this image http://www.e621.net/post/show/146523/3d_gimmick-3ds-chicken-link-ocarina_of_time-parody that we needed a better place to continue the discussion, which was evolving from just Zelda-related to gaming at large.

So if you want to talk about games here's a place to do it.
What are you playing right now? How is it? What kind of gamer are you? Care to sound off on any games you really loved/hated?
Want to share your Steam, Backloggery, Gamertag/PSN or other account? Here you go.

CoD fanboy here. I rape online almost as much as I do in Nazi Zombies. I also play Mushihime-sama Futari, and Final Fantasy.

Playing The Sims: Medieval right now. Been considering reactivating my World Of Warcraft account since I have a better internet connection.

As my main gaming rig is down and out, I'm currently playing Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe. It's even more fun than the classic version, and the ability to play with old trains and to start at any time frame really increases the challenge.

I'm also going to install Dwarf Fortress, since apparently it will run on just about any PC. Armok's thirst must be quenched!

I'm on Team Fortress 2,waiting till Rift becomes compatible for Mac on STEAM.

not playing any games atm. I will get Skyrim when it comes out though.

Currently playing

X³: Terran Conflict
- A science-ficiton real-time-empire-building-first-person-space-flight-simulator as complicated as it is obscure. Singleplayer only, lots of support for third-party modifications.

Halo: Reach
- I like Halo. Deal with it.

Alice: Madness Returns
- Never got a real chance to play the first; thoroughly enjoying this installment.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
- Eh. The gameplay is exactly the same as its predecessor and it's severely lacking in content. Though I'm honestly impressed with how well the porting was done from a technical standpoint. The controls work remarkably well, too.

Waiting for

X: Rebirth
- Sequel to the above.

Gears of War 3
- Beast mode looks fun.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Liked Oblivion. Excited for this. I watched a gameplay video and thought Assassins Creed+Bioshock+Monster Hunter.

Modern Warfare 3
- I also like CoD. Also deal with it.

Snake Eater 3D
- I never got a chance to play the original Snake Eater (never owned a PS2) and I'm a huge MGS fan, so I'm very happy I'll get another chance at it. Like with Mercenaries, I'm also very interested to see how much of the original gameplay holds up through porting (getting to see the capabilities of the 3DS' hardware and what not.)

I play a whole lot of stuff. If you wanna add me on Steam or something, feel free to ask, I just don't want to post my account right here where anyone could see.

I play L4D2, portals, just about any horror genre game, elder scrolls IV:oblivion, and guitar hero.

I love pretty much every game which has a decent multiplayer mode... Playing Battlefield:Bc2 , League of Legends and APB:R right now. Super excited for Battlefield 3 and Star wars: TOR. :T

You guys who love multiplayer should grab Serious Sam HD gold while it's on sale on steam for $8. Completely worth it. One of the greatest CO-OP experiences ever made. And a great way to see if you want to be on board for the upcoming Serious Sam 3. (Spoiler: You do.)

Oh god no. No it won't. There are cutting-edge rigs that will crash and burn on Dorf Fortress. You can play a low-end game I'll agree, but get ready to see your comp crash because it eats up every last resource. x-x

HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAAHno.

Well.

It'll probably run. Just expect slowness. ANSI graphics doesn't mean that it isn't a resource hog (the pathfinding takes up so much processing time it isn't even funny).

Currently playing: Team Fortress 2, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep.

I should be getting Kingdom Hearts Final Mix some time this week, and I'll probably glue myself to the TV as a result.

I WOULD be playing Battle for Middle Earth but my disk drive died, which rules out Starcraft 2 and pretty much everything I don't have on steam until I can get a replacement.

Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, Minecraft, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Metro 2033, Oblivion, Sims 3, Fable 3.

Just recently (yesterday actually), I purchased Doom 3 + expansion, Quake 4, and Quake Wars on sale. I know these games have been out for a while, but due to my budget I don't purchase games very often. I use to be addicted to Enemy Territory (1,000 hours on xfire), so hopefully Quake Wars will bring some of that back, considering it's still alive. I remember hearing a lot of positive comments when it was still in beta. I ordered physical copies, so I'm waiting for them to arrive.

As much as it's an oxymoron, I consider myself somewhat of a Linux gamer, so I mostly play games with an available Linux client. Fortunately, most of the games I was already playing have a Linux client. Before my house got robbed (long story, basically I was forced to use a Linux machine, and I ended up liking it), I was mostly playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Quake 3, and Penumbra.

I'm looking forward to 0 A.D. coming out, I use to be a big Age of Empires fan, as well as an Empire Earth fan. I purchased some games in the last humble indie bundle that I haven't gotten around to playing yet. So yeah...

From what I read online, it's more about RAM than anything. As long as I pick a small starting point, I should be fine.

By the way, does anyone here play Space Station 13? I'm thinking about getting back into that.

I used to play a little Goon SS13, was fun. I'd be interested in getting back into it. :3

DF is really CPU limited. At the beginning, it'll run beautifully on almost any system, but population increases (of dorfs or non-caged animals) or invasions will cause huge increases in CPU use (and once there's no more CPU to use, corresponding slowdowns). There are things you can do to help: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Maximizing_framerate

Updated by anonymous

I view framerate drops as Armok's little way of hinting that I should have some fun.

Incoming tl;dr:

I'm a little over halfway through "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" and while I now understand its popularity its still not scary. Maybe that's just me though, I don't generally find Lovecraftian things very scary at all. Probably since a lot of Lovecraft's horror is based on the idea of "Oh no what if humanity was unimportant and powerless on a cosmic scale?!?" which is something I accepted a long time ago.

In spite of its lack of scares ED:SR is definitely a well made game. The episodic format works very well and the environments and art range from competent to beautiful, especially for an early Gamecube title. While nowhere near as scary as the early Resident Evil games its much better acted/written and the controls are I would say actually too good for a horror game.
It's difficult to be scared of a mob of monsters when you can just target and cut ones head off, leaving it standing there with its arms searching the space its newly nocked-off noggin used to be in an unintentionally hilarious animation. Then do the same to the rest before finishing them all off. Considering this it's not surprising that the game has thus far been entirely too easy, I've died maybe twice. That was *before* getting the magic spells to replenish my health and sanity, magic itself naturally replenishing when you walk.

Speaking of which, the creators obviously had a lot of fun with the much-touted sanity effects. Allow too many monsters to gaze on you without performing finishing moves (or periodically just walking in circles in a room and casting the "restore sanity" spell) and in addition to a more spooky soundtrack the game will play tricks on you. Pretending to mute your tv, having you clip through the floor or other fun effects. (I won't spoil the best ones.) Essentially the game becomes a giant troll in and of itself if you don't keep your sanity meter up.

Since ED:SR is considered a cult classic its getting a little more expensive and difficult to find, but those interested should still be able to snag it for under $20 I think.
Judging from what I've played so far I would say most any Lovecraft fan who hasn't already tried it would be missing out if they passed this game up.

I want to get into WoW, but it's so boring. I just want another multiplayer game besides Black Ops because it's a terrible game, and World at War has too many fucking modders.

Starcraft 2 and sometimes Combatarms. I also play Elements, Scared Season 2 and Perfect World.

Wow is a grind slog, with more grind and massive elitism at the end. It's... worse than boring, really. if you have a friend to play with through the levels, or like to roleplay and can manage to find enough roleplayers to work with, it can be fun- but the game itself is really bad, when you take a step away from it.

WoW is all about what you want from a game: me, i LOVE quests and leveling... So, I have fun with it. Especially since I DO always play with a friend, and we tend to play tank/healer, so we can survive anything...

Worse then boring is a really harsh phrase. ANYTHING is boring if you do it long enough. Play wow until you're not having fun. Then stop. It's as simple as that :)

If you like leveling, then level. If you like raiding, then raid. If you like PvP, then you're probably in an awesome place because last I knew, you could hit level 15, and spend the rest of your life in battlegrounds if you wanted. (and can buy your armor upgrades and stuff) the point is just to do what's fun for as long as it's fun.

Wow, over all, is a *good* game--mechanics, visally, story, etc. it's "king" for a reason. But anything is tiring if you do it for too long. You just have to remember that it's an *MMO* and that MMO's *need* a degree of grindiness to *be* an MMO.

I could never get into WoW, no matter how much I tried.

I played the hell out of Diablo II, though. I'm waiting for III, however long that will take.

I played Phantasy Star Online for a bit and enjoyed it, mostly because I had a group of friends and we'd play it together constantly.

The last major MMO I tried was Guild Wars and while it was enjoyable, I think it wore out my taste for multiplayer RPG's. I haven't played one six years. My interest in Diablo III is fueled entirely by nostalgia.

It's odd how very little of the female population play fps games like CoD.

I guess I am the only one there who plays Dofus on a regular basis. I just wish people on the French server were more mature and seriously less "kikoo" as they are since 2-3 years since I first played.

My guess is that more play them than it would appear. Many or most probably just don't announce the fact that they're female so as not to be bogged down in a torrent of trash talk and leers.

I heard that 2/3 of women use a male avatar, and don't use mics to hide their gender. If you don't want to deal with being a woman, why not just get a sex change then?

Sounds like a self-sustaining problem. Women are singled out because there appear to be no women, and there appear to be no women because any who showed up would be singled out. In addition though, perhaps part of it is the same reason why some of the most dedicated bronies won't speak about their passion in public. The problem isn't just "not wanting to deal" with one's gender, but a much too narrow definition (or societal mandate) of what that gender entails in terms of acceptable interests and behaviors.

.... because I'm a woman. My dislike for being asked how big my tits are, or having my skills belittled, and having to deal with people saying things they would NEVER say to my face due to the anonymity of the internet has NOTHING to do with my self-identification of being female.

I've had a few girls on my friends list; 3 of whom were bad, and 1 who was better than me in certain CoD gametypes who eventually deleted me and one of her friends for "making her suck 2 rounds in a row by doing shitty". I played with them a lot and rarely ever did I hear them take flak for being a woman, whereas I get a metric ton of it for being black, and not talking like I just finished my 8th bucket of KFC. I don't plan on changing my skin color or trying to hide facts any time soon.

You might be surprised. Last I checked, about 52% of on-line gamers were women.

It might depend on the game type. I'm guessing that men lean towards multiplayer and fps games like CoD, Halo, and GoW, while women lead towards more casual or single-player games.

Yeah that's not a very big sample to draw conclusions from though. Considering the estimates that over half the online gaming population is female. A lot of people just don't care to deal with such hassles as cat calls etc. during leisure activities. And while I agree they shouldn't feel they "need to hide it" since there's nothing to be ashamed of, if they don't wish to announce their sex they don't have to.

Updated by anonymous

I know they don't need to announce it, but is simply communicating with teammates in a team game so bad? I haven't had any catcalls, but people always do ask me if i'm white or black, since my voice confuses people. Why haven't I gotten catcalls?

Updated by anonymous

Because in the eyes of many, you're a man, which means you may be competent, while a female, on the other hand, is probably going to suck no matter what.

Also, you don't have boobs they can visualize.

So there was gameplay of Sly 4 at this years E3 and it somehow escaped my notice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdweUQ0eN4M& **

A lot of people are apparently complaining about the graphics, but they seem about as faithful to the spirit of the original's as you could get away with, it could be like that horrible ass Playstation Move version of Sly after all.
The original Sly games maximized what you could do with the limitations of the PS2, turning chunky lines into beautiful, dark and evocative art deco masterpieces. But if you were to make a game that looked exactly like that today it would be immediately dismissed by a large percentage of the market as "outdated". So you've got to change it up to some degree. I do hate how they've shortened Sly's face but maybe that was SuckerPunch's idea, since they don't seem to have complained about it.
This is the one game I've been waiting for the entire current console generation SuckerPunch (if it had come out earlier I'd already own a PS3) please, please don't let the new guys screw it up.

**On a side note Sessler and Webb are really showing their age, I haven't watched an episode of X-Play since it was on Techtv and I was like "Daaamn" lol.
