Topic: Losing pets

Posted under Off Topic

My 11-year-old dog died today 7-20-11 of a tumor in her heart. Has anyone else lost a pet? If so, how did you cope? I really need some support here.

That sucks. I certainly hope you got another one.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've lost pets before. It's very, very hard at first, but you'll feel the loss less intensely with time, even though it doesn't seem possible right now. Best wishes.

Pretty sure Bad Dragon okay I'm probably going to get banned if I finish that thought.

Best thing to do is to go get yourself another dog, preferably of a different breed. The search for a new dog will help to keep your mind off your loss.

I run an animal farm, so sadly we lose pets every month. I just lost a really friendly chicken to a genetic quirk, I lost about $1,000 worth of Boer goats to an unknown disease last week*, I have a cat who has a brain tumor and has stopped eating entirely now, and I typically lose one baby pygmy goat every breeding cycle due to simple "failure to thrive".

I hate to say it, but after about 20 graves I've gotten a bit jaded to the heart ache.

*I've discovered that milk goats are the weakest of all goat breeds. They die to just about anything, and Boers are the weakest of the lot due to bad genetics. If you want a goat that will live for years, get a pygmy.

I'm sorry for your loss. The only thing I can say is that the pain fades in time. Might I suggest devoting some time to helping animals in your immediate vicinity? For example, I have helped catch and release dozens of stray cats in my neighborhood to help curb the stray population. No More Homeless Pets gives them medical treatment, sterilizes them, and releases them back into the suburban jungle. All the cats I have now (5 of them) are former strays I rescued as kittens and they are fat and happy.

That SUCKS. At least he lived to be 15, though. I loved Sally. I'll miss her every day. What kind of cat was Milo? Milo is a great name for a cat. My cat's name is Lucky. He has seven toes on each front paw. Unfortunately, he has no personality whatsoever. :/

:( I may get flamed, but even animals have a "soul". I beleive we will see our loved one's again, even pets.

ever heard an old ass movie called "the adventures of milo & otis"? he looked just like the cat in that movie, and acted the very same way, the movie is a good 20 years old, but i still like to watch it on youtube every now and then,

I totally agree with you. I'm so glad someone else out there believes animals have a soul. The only animals that don't have souls are wasps and mosquitoes. Their souls are clouds of black, tar-like hate. >.<

And roaches, fleas, ticks, and... and... and... Well you get the point. But, even those animals and protists we abhor serve their roles. In fact, insects outnumber and outweigh weigh us by far.

Oh, I'd forgotten about those.

Bigfoot (Oj/White Hemmingway Cat), Azura (Himalayan), Baghera (black tom cat), Akira (Calico), Mononoke (Calico), Mr.Cat (Makarel tabby), Ms. Kitty (Calico), Fluffy (Gray with Himalayan looks), Eragon (Iguana), Smokey(Iguana), Magnum(Golden Retriever), Pebbles (bird-dog mutt), Rambo (rescued baby squirrel), Tiger (gray tabby, rescued newborn).

These are the pets I've lost over the years. I still have 7 other pets who are doing well. I miss them all and nearly came to tears thinking of them all. I've cried at the deaths of all my pets but it gets easier over time.

Anytime Joe. Glad to have you with us here at E6. Take your time to grieve and remember the times she was happy. I've never seen happiness like that which animals possess.

First pet that died for me was a hamster. I had him less than a year, and he died of age. Next was a cat who I had significantly longer. Some kidney problem. Most recent was a pet snake, who we're not sure what killed him.

And here is how I suggest you cope. Continue to live. Time heals all wounds, as they say, and I have found this to be true. Mourn while you need to, but don't get stuck in it. I've seen people go into a horrible depression that lasts for decades over less than this, and my only advice is to not let that happen.

From the sound of your most recent post, you're coping well. That's good. I wish I had more useful advise, but all I can say is what I already have. Feels like the right advice to give, y'know?

Well everyone, I have some good news. :) I'm getting a dog today. She's a plotthound. Her name is Coco and she's 5 years old. Wish me luck.

extra awesome points to you for getting an ADULT dog! :D So many people get caught up in PUPPYPUPPYPUPPYPUPPY and ignore the fact that there are so many adult and 'old' animals out there that need love too :D

Why thank you. Yeah, she's a great dog. Unfortunately, she has a hard time calming down. :/ Oh well, I love her no matter what.

Honestly, she's probably jsut excited to be with a new person. I don't know where she's ben before or what her life was like, but she might be afraid that you're going to go away too, and is trying hard to to be the bestest happiest dog she can for you so you will want to love her. :)

plus, from what I was reading about plotthounds on wikipedia, they are active, and seek the attention of humans. But just give her time to settle in :)

snow speaks the truth, my first dog was about 4 years old and he was the best, cocker spaniel

Thanks you guys. Also, I was wrong about her age. She's actually 4 years old, not 5. But, hey, that means I'll have one more year of her life with her. :D
