click on their name and hit PM, and reply when it says "you have mail"

Go to their profile and click "send message" at the top.

Either that or click "My Account" at the top, click "My Mail", then click "compose" at the top and type the persons name you want to send it to, give it a title and your message and hit send.

Responding to one is simple. Click "Respond" at the top of the message and type your response.

You were able to navigate to a 12-year-old dead thread, but don't know how to go to someone's profile?
The comment above yours even tells you how to send a message without going to their profiles.

If you still can't figure it out, clicking on the name of the person goes to their profile.
Their names are above their avatar pictures, coloured in blue and in bold.
