Topic: .jpeg and .jpg

Posted under Off Topic

I have a few (probably retarded) questions regarding jpeg extensions...

1. Is there any real difference in the data content of a .jpeg and a .jpg, I am assuming not.

2. Why the fuck does the .jpeg extension even exist? 99% of other common non-proprietry extensions are three letters (.bmp, .png, .avi, .gif, etc). JPEG group also sometimes does it with .mpg (.mpeg instead).

3. Does e621 support the upload of .jpeg files... lots of people on FA and other art sites upload images in .jpeg format and I've been renaming them to .jpg when I download because I thought there is a chance e621 might reject them.

Also, .jpeg can be a pain because not all devices or OS can support them. The imagebrowser on my Dingoo A320 for example (a PMP game console) would not recognise .jpeg as an image file.
Thoughts?

No.

Early (and I mean early) operating systems limited the size of file extension name. Newer OSs removed that limitation, but some programmers stuck with three-character extensions out of preference.

"Less is more" is an important aspect in computer programming.

Yes.

That's odd. JPEG is a rather old and very common file type.

I've never heard of Dingoo before. I did a quick search on it, and all I know is that it's something of an open-source video game console.
