Topic: Bulk uploading cheapening site content?

Posted under General

Is it just me or is the sudden influx of images kinda watering down the content here?

It's just always seemed like the stuff posted here has been more along the lines of a hand-picked selection of people's favorite images rather than just posting every image pertaining to a certain genre/character/artist/etc.

While I'm not totally against this kinda thing since it may be a boon towards some members, it seems to me that it's more of a hindrance since I now have to sift through 2-3 pages of new uploads that are practically cookie-cutter replicas of each other with only the names changed to protect the innocent.

Also, the fact that the majority of them are sorta cheaply drawn (IMO) kinda adds to the frustration.

What bothers me the most is the fact that EVERY SINGLE IMAGE on the first 4 pages (with the exception of about three images) have maybe three tags and one of them is 'tagme." If you're going to be fancy and upload hundreds of images at once, at least have the fucking decency to tag them yourself like you should be doing in the first place.

Oh, sorry. I meant for that to be a topic starter, not a rant. I seem to have babbled there for a bit...

Sorry, yet again, I accidentally chose the wrong program to run over-night, instead of a simple information scrape it decided to xfer from other websites.

Thankfully it crashed before it did as much spamming as it could of.

I am tagging everything right now.

Sorry.

Definitely prefer the "hand picked" image selection myself, particularly when they have source links so I know where to go find more of an artist I like, even if it's on a non-English website. No need for spam then.

Well, I have finished tagging the entirety of the last batch.

If you dislike what I upload, feel free to add user:Kitsu~ to the blacklist, that is what it is there for ;)

You also have to put each set of blacklist tags on it's own line (you might already know that, but at one point I didn't, and it caused confusion).

And the opinion of quality is just that, an opinion. Just because you don't like something does not mean that it should be removed from existence.

The voting system exists for a reason. ;)

That, however relies on the masses sharing your own opinion. And people seem to rarely use it on marginal posts or lack of tagging. They just use a comment to berate them for that.

I almost hate to blacklist an entire user's submissions, though. Because even if I object to some content that he/she posts, there may be other things that I actually like. Unless of course they're just being complete jackasses, though they'd probably be banned before I got a chance to blacklist them.

I also never said I wanted them "removed from existence," I merely pointed out my opinion. I'm allowed to have one of those, right?

Identify a pattern of the type of images a user was uploading and blacklist a query (just put all the tags on one line, "user:Kitsu~ tagme" for example.

I promote freedom of speech, but making a forum post out of it is incredibly pretentious, wasteful and inefficient.

Opinions about images are much better targeted towards the voting system and individual comments.

Creating a thread for the sole purpose of expressing a strong dislike about a user, a user's inept ability to tag, a user's posting habits and dislike for a particular art style in a very-negative way is incredibly troll-like.

I think you're taking this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously.

Pretentious? Wasteful? Inefficient? That sounds like another opinion talking.

What happened to the wink emotes? I liked you a lot better when you seemed to have some grasp of sarcasm.

I can't help but agree with logitech in a way. What I like about this site is that it helps me find new artists to enjoy. Again, this is just an opinion, and I'm not trying to imply that my opinion should be official policy, but mass uploads tend to hide obscure artists who NEED exposure and instead we have to put up with mass spam of Inuki art and anon Japanese Oekakis.

That's correct, but I didn't make a thread expressing it, now did I?

No, but you did make several posts so I'd call it about even.

I'm still honestly trying to figure out why you're so incredibly butthurt over this.

What I said was in response to what was said, if this thread didn't exist I wouldn't of created one to express my opinion.

Maybe I should of just ignored this thread...

Like it or not, each user has their own impact on the site, and it's only inevitable that philosophies on the purpose of the site would conflict between users. I don't think there's a single thing wrong with venting frustrations like this, would you rather have it stay silent and just have user resentment boil until it blows up even worse?

Edit: Man, I wish there was a way to blacklist "Random Anime Neko with no link back to who drew it, what site it came from, or even the SMALLEST hint of who drew it" posts.

I'm working on a bot to automatically tag images without an artist tag with unknown_artist, tolerate it in the meanwhile.

Let me clarify some shit.

This is a site for the uploading and tagging/categorization of art. The first step before things can be tagged/categorized is that they have to be UPLOADED.

Provided things get tagged after, I have no problem with bulk uploads.

Not quite so, speaking as a local tagger who's written a (manual) bulk uploader tool myself. It's possible to tag as you upload, highly recommended!

What TheListener said about newcomers and exposure too. Some of us like to be careful about what we choose to post; if you have to tag up front, then you're more selective. Selectivity is good, embrace it :)

Diversity of style and subject matter is good too, and the site needs to embrace that. But simply choosing a few nominated artists and shoveling everything they do onto e621 doesn't necessarily generate diversity. Lots of posters showing people what they really like *will*, and as a bit of a bonus the general quality should be a touch above FA etc too.

Anyway, rant over. Post what you like. Be good.
