Topic: The Big March Update

Hi, to all users. This is Arcturus here, your humble overlord.

Some of you may have noticed of late that the site is getting slower.. and slower... and s.. l.. o.. w.. e.. r...

We've tried to take a number of steps to remedy this, to little effect. This compounded with some other issues of 'customer service' being unsatisfactory means we're on the lookout for a hosting provider that can handle e621's growth.

What this means for users: When we can raise funds for this (details at bottom), we'll have a short period of transitional downtime and then, we'll be on a server that will have so much bandwidth, that even Google will go "Daaaaamn" (Or not quite that much. But plenty!).

The downside to this is, we need to raise another few hundred bucks again. I figure that, if FA can raise around a thousand a month, you guys can surely spring a few hundred to make this place a better place, right?

So..

We're getting a new hosting provider soon. This will fix all speed issues. We need money for this, at least a couple hundred US dollars.

If this does not happen, we may just have to temporarily close e621 until such time as money can be raised, before the site becomes completely unusable (It's already down to semi-usable).

However, if it does happen, downtime will be minimal. The server will be kept up until the files and such have been transferred over and will be kept live during the DNS transition period, so you can continue to look at stuff until the change is over.

You can donate through tipjoy, link is on every single page. Or just use this handy URL: http://tipjoy.com/u/e621/ After donating, you must Pay Your Pledge. Payment is through PayPal, so it's easy to do.

I'd just like to say how I know this is kind of annoying, coming only 4 months after we held another donation drive for the current server. We thought it'd keep up. I hope you can all find the time to help us. Tempers and tolerance is wearing thin in the administration because of the issues we've been having with our host, related to bandwidth and previously mentioned customer service issues. It's certainly no fun to moderate a website when it loads as slowly as e621 has been for the past few months.

Please help us show that we can run THE BEST site for archival of anthropomorphic art on the internet.

ps anybody looking to donate monthly or make other agreements for privileges or just to help out can sure as heck email the admins or catch us on IRC!

And if you don't know where the IRC is, it's #e621 on irc.furnet.org !

As I am a frequent user of the site, this is an important message indeed! :O

I hope I can make some kind of donation soon, I have no money at the moment... ;_;

Has any thought gone to running the site on something like Amazons EC2?

Yes and we'd end up having to raise around $500 a month for bandwidth alone. Amazon ain't cheap.

This site has yet to succumb to the failure and trollshittery or failfinity. I'll post this around, see if some closet e621-ers have some cha-ching.

Thanks. We've raised $60 (-paypal fees) so far, but we've still got a way to go. We need about $400!

Those guys take a single payment of around 200 euro's for unlimited EVERYTHING (bandwith, disk space etc.) and they just went Silicon Valley.

*HINT* *HINT*

They don't support Rails and I am sure if we started using terabytes of bw, we'd get kicked off regardless.

I don't have paypal at the moment, but in a few weeks I'll be sure to donate.

nah, i live in europe and my webserver/host like the internet access is not limited on the bandwidth at all. summoning such a billing philosophy around here would be unacceptable! an heresy!

dunno what could work on this host, btw i'm just leaving it there...

Not sure how long you need this cash to hit. I can in about a month make a donation to help the cost. However, I'd like to point out that I'm running vista and have shown no slowage on loading pages and pics. I've seen slower loading MSN or Hotmail, just so you know. Even FurBid is MUCH MUCH MUCH slower than you are. And yes, fur affinity is a million times slower. I'm thinking it might be the times that I get on. Right now its midnight and I'm EST so that would be around 11 CST. Anyone use Furcadia? I've changed from IRC to Furc because of its funness. I've bought things there but its FREE to have a place. Much like IRC, but with actual movable creatures and FUN FUN FUN. Like I said. I'll donate later, but bills have piled up and taxes aren't filed yet.

I was just informed of your site by someone else, and you seem to have a decent operation going here.

I get paid next Thursday, but for the time being, don't have anything to contribute. Is there a way to just donate through PayPal without having to screw around with extras like that TipJoy thing? I don't know what that is, but I know I don't want to create more accounts out there than I have to.

Updated by anonymous

Oh, TipJoy works through PayPal. You just pay them instead of directly. (We cannot take donations straight through PayPal, it's a violation of ToS. So we have to use a third-party service.)

I don't have paypal account and it's nearly impossible to get a proper credit card for paypal here. Should I go and die already? :D

As soon as my transfer goes through, youve got some from me X3

Bruh, this thread was from March of 2009. Not sure how relevant this is now.
