It may just be me, but whenever someone directly links to a picture in the source field, I get a 403 error, saying that it's forbidden.

I'm pretty sure FA gives a 403 error if there's a referrer other than furaffinity.net. Solution: copy/paste the image URL into your address bar, that way it can't be traced back to e621.net.

In Opera you can just click in the address field after getting the 403 and hit enter to clear referrer data.

log into FA before you click the link, you do this set the cookies

Same thing happens to me even when I am logged in.

I believe it's not about cookies, it's about http referer

Then I move that instead of direct linking images, we just use the source link to the artists' page, or else the submission page.

I already always use the artist's gallery as the source URL (if there were any way to get the submission page URL using only the image''s filename I'd do that, but you can't).
