Topic: Trying again.. Valid security concern

Posted under General

Once before, I tried to express my concerns about this site being listed with McAfee antivirus as a "significant security risk". Are there any viruses associated with the graphics shown here? I think it's a valid question, and would appreciate it not being deleted before anyone can respond, again. Now, I have NEVER received a virus through viewing pictures here, and am thinking it is just a form of censorship among some AV programs.

All those web trust services are just big machines and nobody gives a shit about a single halt on a single website

Also it's a silly question.

If admins for some reason would like to put malware on the site, they'd never give you a positive answer.

If not, admins would just fix the problem (more likely), except if it's somehow conneted with ads providers (but I suppose McAfee tracks problems only on current domain so this is excluded too)

We had a user upload a flash once a couple months ago with an embedded malware ad dealie inside of it. It was quickly discovered and removed within a day thanks to user feedback. Outside of that, there is not, and has never been any security risk associated with this site, and we strive to make it a safe and reliable service for all our users. If there's ever any risk found here, for any reason, we would want to know about it IMMEDIATELY so we can deal with it.

In regards to the McAfee red-flagging the site - it's a blatant false positive, and if you read up on siteadvisor, this is far from the only site recieving grief from this bullshit 'service' in this way. The hurdles we're forced to jump through if we want to get it reviewed and fixed are honestly not worth the trouble, so McAfee can kindly go fuck themselves, and I guess you'll have to take us on our word that we're not out to screw you.

And if recent events are any indication, McAfee is more malicious than any malware I have encountered.

I don't use antivirus software and I never have trouble with virii, even on my Windows install. If you are not computer literate, you shouldn't be using a flimsy OS.

Recent events? I've never really heard anything good about McAfee at any point... Last I knew, it was more invasive and almost as crippling as any kind of malware it's supposed to protect against...

But then they wouldn't have any OS to boot up!

my norton see's nothing wrong with this site and oh, btw
norton > mcAfee :D

IMO, Norton and McAffee both suck...
They use up too much system resources, and slow your computer all to hell.

Avast and Avira are my favs. Along with Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Trend Micro: HouseCall...

Hell I built my rig almost 2 years ago and I havent had any major malware, spyware, or viruses. Granted I did a full clean hard drive install when I went from vista to windows 7, and I've had no trouble since.

I visit this site just about every day.
No bad juju here.

norton automatically deletes viruses that you try to open which is why i love it. as for computer speed, my downloaded games slow it down more ☆.☆

Yeah, but myself, one time a virus got INTO NORTON, and when it tried removing it, it fritzed out. By the end of it, I had to try and uninstall Norton, but when I did that, everything else fritzed out. When I contacted Norton, they asked if I remembered the name of the virus that popped up, and when I couldn't, they gave me a nice "tough luck".

ah I read norton 360 is the only one where you don't have to worry about viruses, while on other norton's you do. still, norton beats avast and every other antivirus any day :)

Norton used to beat the other Anti-Viruses. Norton used to be the best of the best, the cream of the crop, the king of the hill.

Get the hint where I'm going with this?

Somewhere around 2002, Norton started getting REALLY cocky. They were the best, and nobody was even close. Why worry?

Since then, lots of anti-virus programs have popped up and exceeded Norton, while Norton started falling behind.

I seen that too. I have an old PowerMacintosh in my basement, and it has a copy of Norton on it...
It seems way better than today's Norton.

Heh, fighting over antiviruses... ya know. I'm just gonna keep my copy of symantec antivirus, practice good browsing habits and be happy with it. :) worked so far XD

Former Staff

I've been using computers since i was 9 years old (1993).
I never had an antivirus nor a firewall.
I've never had a virus, never had any issue, yet i've always used different versions of Windows.
Whenever i get a new laptop, the first thing i do is to uninstall the antivirus software, whichever it is, seeing how invasive and ressource consuming they are (no exception).

I don't know what's that virus thing you people talk about. Stop downloading warez and opening mails from strangers. Also stop using the very last OS with the very last available update.

don't really know a lot about the history of norton, this is my first time using it and it is really superior to my last one. (system sweet 8)
i never really needed virus protection, but then i started downloading torrents XD. can't trust those things lol

...that you know of. There are certainly things you can do to reduce the risk of infection, as you stated, but if you hook a Windows box straight up to the internet, without so much as a router/firewall, it's pretty much a guarantee that you'll get port-scanned and infected within a couple of days, tops. Very easy mistake to make if you ever move your computers to other networks.

Also: drive-bys and day-0 exploits inserted into major ad networks. Spoofed emails that look exactly like their legitimate counterparts, directing you to very subtly typo'd domains with clones of their original sites, complete with appropriately registered SSL certs, just to harvest your login credentials (which can then be used to gather personal data). Malware that reproduces those infernal Adobe and Java software updaters.

You can live dangerously all you want. I, for one, welcome my antivirus overlords.

And I've been using computers since 1989, the era of dumb terminals and 2400 baud modems.

And, well, the very last available updates basically include security fixes...

Thanks all. I appreciate the info about that malware bit. I'm about to uninstall Mcaffe anyway as it's a memory whore anyway.

Oh, and to be clear, I never received any sort of electronic VD. I really just wanted to see if anyone else experianced this type of problem with any security software trying to block e621.net .

Old-school geekery for the win! I do miss BBSes and BBS games. However, I don't miss the early PC days of terminal programs and transferring files with one of either X-modem, Y-modem, or Z-modem protocols, especially when the BBS made you guess which one it used. :/

Updated by anonymous

I still use a few BBS's. Although its telnet now and not RipTerm or ComIt

Ha, RipTerm! Vector graphics support!

Never used ComIt, though.

It was a standard Telnet terminal app. Now HyperTerminal, (and telnet), those were crap. Although, HyperTerminal did have pretty good ASNI support.
