Topic: Tag Editing

Posted under General

I have an honest question about editing tags.

I notice a lot of users announce when they edit tags, such as "I'm pretty sure this isn't an easel. *edits tags*" and the like. Most of the time, they are fairly obvious, but sometimes there could potentially be some argument, and I understand why it would important to explain why you've changed a tag and what you've changed it to.

The question would be, is it ALWAYS important to let people know when you've altered/added tags, and should I be doing it? Or is this just some weird attention thing that I dont get?

I'd say the second. Anyone who's logged in can just check the tag history anyways, so a comment is really redundant unless you're giving an explanation or asking for others' opinions.

Yeah, it's pretty much "look at me!! I'm tagging!!"

Considering that the entire site focuses on and is driven by exactly two things: posting images, and tagging those images, the fact people announce really mundane edits like they should get a prize or something always makes me do my grumpy face.

While I appreciate that they're making an effort to tag, which is good, I also sort of imagine these people probably also loudly exclaim all sorts of other mundane, expected behaviour. "LOOK EVERYONE I OPENED MY YOGURT CUP!" "EVERYONE! EVERYONE! I...AM...CLIMING...STAIRS!"

That said, I actually do like comments that explain obscure tags being added or why a particular non-obvious correction is done - things like pointing out a particular artist that is often mistaken for another, or reconciling two aliases of the same artist, for example. Posts which entertainingly instruct and inform are infinitely better than more pages of 'durr I would stick my cock in that pant pant' that there is disturbingly so much of.

Because when you're not sure if you tag it right (i.e. species or clothing) you want people to check it?
