When we upgrade to Version 2.2, we'd ideally like to upgrade our main server at the same time. We have the option of getting double the memory and more disk space, for the same monthly cost.

The new codebase is faster and will lead to quicker load times for all. But with more memory and a faster disk, we can serve more things simultaneously, and cache and store more images. That reduces the strain on the server a LOT!

Yep. As it stands, we barely make 50% of the monthly cost of running e621 from the ads. But unlike other sites, we don't harangue people with huge messages everywhere going "GIVE US MONEY NOW". But, this upgrade will improve things for everyone, so we think some donations could be good!

Actually, you can donate in one of two ways.

Number 1: Through AlertPay on e621's InkBunny page (Betcha didn't know we had one!) at (LINK REMOVED - Varka)

Number 2: By sending an email to (EMAIL REMOVED - Varka) for information on other ways to donate.

If you donate, we're planning to record the amount a user donates on their user profile (provided they want the information public). That way, you can see how much a user has helped and thank them for it!

We need to raise $900 for the upgrades. Now before you say "whoa, that's a HECK of a lot!", remember: It costs that much to run e621 for just six weeks.

== What happens if you don't raise all the money?

If we come a little bit short, we'll cover the shortfall. If we fall a LOT short, then we likely won't be able to afford the upgrades as e621 already runs at a large loss. So it'll all get spent on hookers and blow, and by hookers and blow, I mean it'll go towards the monthly running costs.

== So finally, a TL;DR rundown?

I would normally use my money for more.. noble causes; however, considering I've never paid a cent for porn in my life and this is probably the best repository for furry porn I've come across, I <i>might</i> think about donating.

To be honest though I'm not sure how I feel about a furry site of any kind showing up on my bank account.

I'm pretty sure that's the point of AlertPay -- it's an abstraction layer (like PayPal), so
<b>A)</b> you don't have to worry so much about the safety/legitimacy of the site in question, and
<b>B)</b> you don't get anything more identifiable than 'AlertPay' on your transaction list.

Of course, this is purely conjecture as I know nothing about AlertPay in specific.

Alright, I went ahead and donated. For reference, the credit card option <i>does</i> redirect you to AltertPay as well. That was a little confusing.

I did not need to open an account alertpay to pay with my credit card on inkbunny (I just created an account inkbunny)

Well, did my part. AlertPay also let me do a credit card donation without needing an account.

They have a pretty slick setup. I like it, and may need find more excuses to support it.

I think rewarding people who send us money with accounts that have the capacity to potentially wreck large swaths of the site/cripple bandwidth, with no regards to their prior history or contributions on the site would set a bad precident and lead to potential Bad Things.

What mellis said. Whilst a donation shows that you love, positions of power must be earned with responsibility!

The only way to get more things on e621 is to have a long history of doing good things~ Then you get rewarded~

Agreed, although I think he means bumped up to a special status for example 'donator' which could give you the right to a personal profile picture and/or coloured name, something that could potentially represent you as a user and keep you that bit more special to everyone else. something just short of what you'd get for having a history of doing good stuff for the site.

The last thing we need is flashy name colors all over the place and they've already said they're never adding avatars.

I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with name colors. It would be nice if admins/mods were more easily recognizable. I still can't remember who is a mod beyond mellis and Arcturus.

That's cool. I don't even know that I'd use whatever features come with it anyways, myself.

I'd have been happy even if it was just a pretend-promotion that doesn't actually do anything but mark me as someone who cared enough to donate. I guess that's what recording the amount donated is for. :)

I wanted to donate an amount, but I saw I can't with Paypal and I tried AlertPay, but they ask like 20$ for fees per transaction, so I gave up.

Is there another possible way to donate ? (I'm just the kind of one who doesn't like to disturb someone by emailing .w.)

No, $0.59 + 3% processing fee by VISA or MASTERCARD or $0.59 only by alertpay...

If you think about it, that means the more accounts you created to ban-evade, the more you have to pay!

That was for the full $900. At our current level, we're down to 4.6 cents per user. A bargain!

Sometimes showing the average donation amount along with current total encourages people to donate more.

We're still at $203.75, half of which was donated by just one user (and an awesome user at that!).

I want to donate, but I was laid off back in March and haven't found a new job yet :/

thnx wolfiewolfie, it wasnt quite the same way for me but i did go threw some of the settings of symantec and disabled a net block that allowed me to see the images, so thanks alot bud

yeah... symantec did that to me too... only when I told it to not let firefox send out what kind of browser I'm using though... weird.

yeah the whole stealth thing in it can be annoying but is good for many other things for protection lol im just happy to be able to enjoy the arts on the site now :D

Makes sense, e621 heavily uses referrers to make sure you're actually ON the site before letting you view images (to prevent hotlinking), so if the referrer is blocked, you'll have problems.
