But that doesn't help you much, huh?

Tag things, post good things, help out around the site. Put that need to want to make the site better (or seek attention) into action. Report troublemakers/creepers. Get on the forums. Discuss things. Visit the IRC regularly. Talk to people. Get to know the regulars, the real workers that keep the site in check (mostly). Make friends. Help other users to do better.
These are the kinds of things I like to see users doing. It won't guarantee you a positive record from me, but it could help.

When I joined, I very quickly became involved on discussions about tag usage on the site and tried to be constantly adding (appropriate) tags to images. I flagged every repost I found. I just went around editing tags a lot. Then I got involved in some large-scale retagging projects. Apparently the mods decided I was doing the right thing, and River bumped me up to "Privileged," so I could make use of tag editing scripts to aid in some of these projects. I've kept my record because I don't vandalize tags, I'm still involving myself in large-scale tagging projects, I don't upload reposts, my uploads have a reasonable amount of tags on them, I don't troll (much), and I don't backseat mod. At least I don't think I do.

Other people find and report serious trolls, comment creepsters, tag vandals, and under-agers. I prefer to leave that to the mods, myself, but it works for some.

It's not that ridiculous of a goal. The key is: be constructive. Be constructive often.

Be a noticeable Positive impact :)
