Topic: Comments: forbidden characters?

Posted under General

I'm trying to comment on post #226118.
The comment includes this Chinese character: 愚 (because that's the artist's nick).
But when I click on the preview button, nothing happens.
Once I remove the character, the preview button works again.

Is this a bug or am I DOING IT WRONG?

You could use the literal meaning of the character

Updated by anonymous

It happens to me as well
Previewing forum posts with non-latin characters works though

Since diacritics are supported, you can use yú (the romanization of 愚) if you like
This doesn't seem to work either

Updated by anonymous

Nope, they don't work. It's an error, appears to me as "URIError",

We do not allow "Kanji, romanji, katakana, other gook language" Unicodes, please use the form english name. Unicode IS allowed in smaller extents, such as the heart, or the "Face of disappointment"

Interesting to know

We don't disallow unicode stuff, we just don't allow it in tags for the most part, and try to avoid them in usernames, but there's nothing against using them in comments.

What about Emojis? ippiki made some pretty nasty threats about me using them. He also pointed out that he sees something else other than the Emoji I used so what can you say about this?  some people can't see it. Others can. Why?

Maybe it's the lunar position, spycrabs or the chemical reaction face. But really, a few minutes I saw a comment with a ò (o with grave accent), let me look it up

Edit: Sorry can't find it :/

Because it is a private use area of Unicode, and not designed for universal compatibility.

By definition you cannot expect those characters to show up the same way for everybody.

I want you to go here and here to see some examples of the ways your  might show up, depending on font (click the "view" links).

We dont have the codefont for Emoji installed, so I see a small box with E046 and E04B

I see two chinese/corean/kanji/symbols (can't differentiate), but looking at the links that Snowy posted, Quivira seems to be more likely. AbsebaroKoon, can you please tell us the name of the font so we can understand what are you trying to say? Don't know if it would be useful, but I'm curious...

Well brilliant question, I'm using          .  of 
But seriously, I'm using an iPad right now, I just installed the Emoji keyboard function.

Well, now I have a base. New mission: Search for iPad's fonts
Edit: By any casuality, are they in color?

On my mobile I see the symbols. On my desktop I see a bunch of empty squares.

In my desktop, I see unknown unicode characters 0xe41e, 0xe012, 0xe422, 0xe22e, 0xe05a, 0xe329, 0xe325, 0xe10d, 0xe130, 0xe046, and 0xe34b.

So all "private use area" unicode.

But with a great deal of effort on my part (and thanks to http://rubydoc.info/gems/e4u-emoji/0.0.2/E4U/Emoji ), I think I can figure out what they are. In order:
waving_hand_sign
person_raising_one_hand
open_hands_sign
white_up_pointing_backhand_index
pile_of_poo
heart_with_arrow
bell
rocket
direct_hit
shortcake
birthday_cake

Why can't I turn them into symbols? BECAUSE IT'S PRIVATE UNICODE STOP USING IT.

You'll never get people to stop using private Unicode characters just by asking.
You'd have to ban these people, or change e621 so you can't post private Unicode characters at all. If you care enough, I suggest you turn this idea into a feature request :)

Done.

I found that too, but in a font called "Apple Color Emoji". As the name implies, they're in color. Since the characters are on the private area, they can only be seen on apple's products, or with a compatible font, neither of wich I have, does anybody have a mac who can check this? And as Munkelzahn said, you can't force people to not use them, and banning because of that is not an option. I'm not saying that people should stop using them (I'm no admin or mod, just a mortal) just don't overuse them. I was going to post this yesterday but it was 2 Am already…

I think this clarifies that e6 supports unicode, but they're not encouraged

Standard unicode is fine to use. Private-use characters are annoying and discouraged because only a few people can see them correctly (or see completely different things).

Since I don't think anyone told you (politely at least), roleplaying is not allowed here. You can however take it to 20pc and find her on there.
