Topic: Require a minimum number of tags when posting new content

Posted under General

I've been noticing a lot of new posts recently that have had maybe one or two tags in them. I realize that people may not know everything about the image they posted, but they can at least tag what content is in it.

Just today I fixed about 10 images that only had "tagme" in their list. I think this tag should be phased out and replaced with something more specific like "unknown artist" or "unknown character" etc.

Thoughts?

how about a minimum of 5 tags. else it wont let you upload the image =)

+1 on this. Minimum 5, reject if under that with a polite suggestion and some basic tagging tips.

As a personal rule I try and do a minimum of 5 tags when I upload. Generally works even though I don't consider myself marvelous at tagging and only once have I struggled to get this amount (think I did 4).

It is a good idea but I can see a new type of laziness appearing where people just insert a random set of tags pasted from somewhere or just;

Unknown artist
Unknown character
Unknown Source
Unknown Species
Unknown Gender

if thats going to happen why not ban for some days or weeks?

A quick scan through shows a lot of these images with poor tags come from a lot of the same users... but to be fair, I don't really feel confortable forcing my preferences on tagging on others. I'm in favor of a 5 tag rule, but I won't be upset if it doesn't pass.

I don't think it's really a conflict of opinion/interest, here.

We're talking about a site that RELIES on tagging to better help the user base sort/locate content based on various aspects of the image.

The more comprehensive the tagging, the more detailed the database and the happier the peons.

With good tagging, everybody wins!

Ugh, can we really do something about this? There's been a influx of posts recently with 'tagme' as their only tag. :|

You have my vote..if that means anything at all.

I agree the minimum of 5 tags per image is good.
Atleast the simple ones like if the character is cat you put cat, which automaticly adds the feline tag, and if the person on that image is wearing some thing tipe in the color of the clothing or if it has a cigar add cigar or bow, etc.

Nothing much else to say that wasn't already said imo.

It wouldn't hurt to have a shortlink to that page with the tagging guidelines, or have the actual tagging guidelines appear when you try and edit the picture...

Not sure that it would help against "tagme" pictures. If someone is really lazy to fill the tags, he can just add mess in tag list. I thing adding only a warning "tag your damn uploads" is reasonable.

UPD: Also, I think deleting images that are not tagged for a some period would be good punishment mechanism.

The problem with deleting posts is that once they are deleted they can't be re-posted.

Make the mechanism delete the hash together with it's post. And I think this 'punishment' should only be applied to new posts, otherwise people might loose some of their favorites.

How about this:

- Certain tags, like "tagme" or an empty list of tags, if they are used by the same user more than 3 or 4 times in a 24 hour period will cause the upload to be rejected.

- Some kind of (javascript?) parser that scours the filename for words and patterns that map to known tags and suggests them, i.e. if the filename is "f_98274987234_sexy_kitten_cat_pussy_spread" it pulls those words and pre-populates the tag textfield with "female cat pussy spread".

- Scour the tag database for the top 20 tags (by number of times used) every so often and present them as checkboxes in the upload page, and the user can check the boxes to populate the tag field with them. Would be especially useful with gender and species.

I find that not knowing the name of a tag causes you to not bother with looking it up, this is especially true for longer tags.

Additionally, you must know the tag before you can add it, this also reduces the amount of tags someone would attach.

In my own e621/Danbooru-like image storage program I use AJAX to display a list of tags "Google suggest"-style.

It also helps significantly with tags that are long and difficult to remember, such as "Wolf O'donnell" (how many Ns? how many Ls?).

But in regards to solving the problem, just chuck in some javascript to popup a message box telling the user to add more tags when creating a post

What if the user wants to upload pics in batches and then tag them?

Then maybe "rejected" uploads should go into some type of "bin" that is not part of the posts available to the public, but only visible to that user.

They can be taken out of the bin and put into the posts by tagging or correcting the violation. This would also cut down on bandwidth by not requiring rejected uploads to be re-uploaded.

I also SAGN for a find-as-you-type tag system.

You got your syntax wrong.

I like lots of tags and always add many myself. I can understand that some users are just too lazy to add tags, but at the same time tags make the entire concept of the site useful. You just won't find something that has no tags unless you have lots and lots of patience. For heaven's sake, if you can't type 5 words to describe a picture you are truly pathetic.
