Maybe the other person is using the outdated version of msn, or you are using it. Also to preview share the image you can drag and drop it into your msn window.

If you cant find how to fix it, you can always try emesene, it does not have preview share how ever, but when d&d you send the file.

its not msn, because we both have the same current version, and it also happens over steam. besides, i only do it once in a while, so i don't want to get a whole new messenger just to send links. also, i noticed it only does it when grabing the image url only, not the actual webpage. im thinking the website has some sort of hotlinking thing going on.

You have to copy the URL and send it to the other person, so the other person can open it in its MSN.

nonono, i mean the image url, the source image url, as in lets say http://baddragon.e621.inthesewer.net/data/c0/1d/c01d200c45a9d69719a572c2034fdffe.jpg

That's because hotlinking is blocked. Usually it redirects to a search for the image's MD5 hash. You need to link to the image's post page, not the image itself.

I suppose they don't have properly filled http referer because they got the link not from e621 pages, it can be used as anti-leech mechanism

i suspected as much. it can be a pain when trying to link to large images, but i guess it works anywho
