Topic: What's your average comment score?

Posted under Off Topic

So I was bored, and when I'm bored, I do stats.
I took all my first page of comments (30) and got an average of 1.4 score per comment.
And you, e621?

not negative? wow?
last 30... 0.03 per comment..
wow, not negative :p

Actually, I calculated my first 30 comments and I found -0.1...
I don't know if I should be proud or not

Latest page? 78/30 = 2.6

It really says very little about your overall posting quality though. Style, perhaps. If you're helpful to others that have questions but are otherwise serious, you tend to get at best a few upvotes per post (and that's if people feel like it), but if you make a decent joke or funny remark that can get you upvotes out the ass. That doesn't necessarily make the jokester a better commenter than the nice guy, they're just different.

And sometimes you won't be saying anything wrong and some random asshat will still downvote you into the red. Again, an average here isn't really much of an indication about quality. Though a negative average perhaps is, at least it means you're either often creepy, hateful or a complainer.

Finding the perfect jokes on each post is indeed kind of an art here.

I usually post the first thing that comes to mind. My first page of comments averages +0.7.

I know I've hit gold here and there, but it's really mindless to me.

What gets to me though is, had I spent more than half a second thinking, I could have been the one who discovered otter-space

Took me almost an hour to calculate. And in all honesty, this is something that I wanted to do for a while now, since I'll be here for six months starting July 2015.

Out of 1250 comments, I got 1957 likes.

So +1.5656

I'm a clown I guess.

Like Knotty_Curls, I normally post the first thing that comes to my mind (related to the image, unless I'm replying to another comment)

  • On the first page (30): 0.83

Last page (30): -0.03 (there's only a -1)
All (1470): 0.70

    • Total score: 1036

Most rated: comment #1251920 (35)
Least rated: comment #963961 (-4)

:B

Okay I've gone and went past all of my comments
1553 score for 1636 comments, so an average of 0.95

Bring it on. (σ゚∀゚)σ

But in all fairness, Gareth is an upvote machine, I've rarely seen anyone be so consistently witty.

Wish I could be eloquent like that comment.

Holy hell that's a LOT of upvotes. GG
My personal best is only 39

There are a lot of variations on all of these stats, it's interesting
My recent comment pages sometimes had 100 upvotes, but my last sometimes -5

I've found being a succinct and sardonic commenter helps a lot.
At least, if "average positivity" is your end goal.

Edit : At least, that's what my general data says from the 4800 comment milestone.

The only comments of mine that I take pride in are the ones that go seemingly unnoticed. Several are downvoted, a lot. But these are a few good ones that come to mind

then there are some well-received ones

and many more that were posted on images that no longer exist.

If you want upvotes, time is a big factor. You have to be one of the first to comment on a recently posted image.

The next big factor is the ability to word it. If, like Actini said, your comment is short and silly, it will probably get some love. If you can write page-turning masterpieces like Gareth can, go for it.

But the biggest factor is - and you're gonna hate me for how cheesy this sounds - that it comes from you. I can't think of a clear way to explain that. I'm not saying don't ever use memes, because they can be funny if used properly. And I'm not saying originality is always the best.

Maybe it's just natural charisma. You might have it, you might not. Whatever. Just say what you're gonna say.

24/30 for my most recent comments: .8 average
66/132 for all my comments: .5 average

My highest is +9, and I have a tie for lowest, with two comments at -7.

The +9 was for encouraging someone to use the blacklist rather than raging.

One -7 was for stating that I am out as a zoophile to my mother (relevant to the picture in question).
The other -7 was for saying that I liked a picture, and that I hoped to see more from the artist in the future, though I personally prefer females.

I still don't understand why people found that second one so objectionable.

Just people who didn't prefer females and were a little easy going on the downvote button, I suppose...

As someone who knows a little about statistics, I'd suggest that the median is a much better representation.

(over latest 30)
My median score is 0
Average is 1.46

Obtained via the following Python:

s = [4,7,0,0,0,0,0,0,19,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,3,1,7,0,0,0,0,2,0,0,1,0,0,0]
s.sort()
median = s[len(s)//2]
average = sum(s) / len(s)

I think most people will have a median of 0. It's also interesting to find out the variance.

I just got a 75 in statistics, my second worst mark in my exam results.

As a engineer, I should get better mark!

As someone who knows a little bit about statistics, I don't think the median is particularly useful for this.

I think the average is pretty reasonable. Perhaps the standard deviation would be interesting as well. Some have provided the range, which has been rather interesting.

OK. I promise I won't suggest calculating the kurtosis of the samples... :P

Well, I would suggest the range, the median and the 25% and 75% quantiles. It all depends on what you want to do. If you are doing it because you are as bored as the OP, you can do whatever you want.

I think the median, which as bv pointed out will be 0 for most people, provides the best information about quality (rather than popularity)[1]. Average and range are more relevant to popularity.

[1] this might be overly cynical, so perhaps standard dev is better.
