Topic: Pixiv and its silly censoring policy

Posted under Art Talk

So, I recently decided to use my Pixiv account for other than lurkin' artists' explicit pictures, and decided to upload some of my own here. At first, I didn't really think about the whole censoring thing, but I did know it was some kind of serious law in Japan. Then, just to be sure, I checked the guidelines and they even give a guide on how to mosaic censor pictures if needed, so I freaked out, deleted one of my picture that was 154% guilty for displaying genitals, and censored it to reupload it again.

A moment later, I thought again about all that, and remember on how lots of artists don't even touch their explicit art, even some Japaneses artists leave them untouched, so I'm kind of lost now.

Does it apply only if you are Japanese yourself ? Or if you plan/are selling that piece of art ? Or Pixiv/artists just don't really care about it at all ?

It only applies to japanese citizens. Plenty of artists have uncensored porn on Pixiv.

I really hope this is the case. I broke my soul when I censored my own pictures. I guess I can delete a second time my art and upload the original without worrying about silly censoring policy

How funny, this particular law and the fact that it is the reason for the creation of tentacle porn actually came up in a discussion me and some friends were having at Mcdonalds today.

To think that conversation started by discussing European culture, which drifted to general commentary on Asian culture and ideologies (i.e. respecting political leaders more than is done in Western countries), to porn.

I had the pleasure of speaking to a Japanese animator in a chat room once, he told me the following (I'll sum up what he said, we talked for like an hour) -

"When I want to make a scene with a man and a woman doing something sexual my boss always tell me, you cant do that, or change that, or censor that, as they seem to pref vaginal sex only. I found it rather boring, and it was depressing to not be able to get creative with some of these ideas. However after doing a monster animation I noticed they didnt really care how tentacles pleasured the women, and there was far less censoring in what I could or could not show. It seems the more less human something is, the more freedom I have to change the sexual scenes to my will. This is the reason why I only draw monsters as there is more freedom in what can be done"

So from what I heard anyway, the more censoring comes from more human like characters, and less when they are more beast like.

Yup, as far as I understand it, tentacle porn was nothing more than a way to get around censorship laws.

I'm not a fan of it, but it's history is bizarrely interesting to learn about. As far as I know, this picture from 1814 is the first instance of "tentacle erotica". I actually laughed when reading the translation of dialogue, I just wouldn't normally imagine something that graphic coming from the early 1800s.

Sounds like his boss was seriously into monster porn

Since recently, I noticed some artist being reported on Pixiv and since they have to censor their picture, namely Hoshime and Pienji. Their art usually involves humans so I would think humans are really what Pixiv cares more about censoring. The whole thing about how only Japanese people have to censore their stuff seems to be completely false since then and everyone has to, it's just that Pixiv is not monitoring unless someone reports
