Topic: One weird little art "problem"

Posted under General

So I stopped enjoying drawing very much a while ago. It wasn't really in response to anything, it just started being sucky one day. But now the only time I ever get enjoyment out of it is when I'm high on something, usually some kind of painkiller.

Is this weird? Anyone have a similar experience?

Hmmm... maybe that gives you some kind of creative boost, perhaps?

As for similar experiences I guess I'm sorta the opposite, because I'm usually pushed to do something out of what I normally do (programming, sucking at drawing/composing) when I'm not feeling alright

For me, just like my fanfiction hobby and playing video games, it's not just a hobby, it's a routine. Almost every day, I can set the same amount of time into whatever it is I feel like doing.

In terms of art, I tend to draw for at least one hour before going to sleep.

Nah, there's a bunch of artists that have to do something for inspiration. I NEED music when I 3D model or draw. No music = nothing productive happening for me.

That's not a problem for me. I have nearly 15,000 tracks to listen to when I write or draw.

Right now, I'm listening to Deep Purple.

Nah, it never happens to me, it must suck to be you I guess.
Although I enjoy just about anything while high.

Maybe try a change. Draw some faces or something.

Listen to/watch something that gives you goosebumps. The good kind, not the 'shit i'm scared' kind.

problem solved

I've drawn plenty of them before.

Have you tried something else in general? Like landscapes or objects? Y'know, going back to the basics for a while

And? Any results?

It's all basically the same in the end, not worth finishing.

Then I'm afraid I can't help anymore :/

Not that I was really helping much but moral support is always welcome, right?

It's not very weird. That happened to me too. I used to be a programming addict in highschool, I lost interest in programming in a sudden, one day I woke up with lost interest in programming, and it still remains until now.

its called art block

I can't quite say I've ever got artist's/writer's block before.

In terms of my fanfiction hobby, I view too far ahead and therefore know where I want to take my story.

And with my art, I view what I intend to draw as simplified shapes, and add the details in segments.

I recently finished a Monster Hunter Rathalos armor sketch with this method. It was th first time I've drawn the human being form, as well as full body armor. And it has also become my favorite piece of work yet.

I'd upload it somewhere, but I don't have a scanner yet.

Could be needing a challenge to it; no stimuli from the art's production, no reason to want to do it.

No, I would rather it was easy, drawing is hard enough :\

There's just no point to really overcoming the challenge.

I'm sorry dude, but what do you mean with that?

Search the artist's name. The artist's SEO is not very good, so you might find search results not related to the artist.

Ah, now I get it!

Most of what people are talking about in this thread seems to be depression (whether burnout-induced or otherwise) WRT art.
I mean.. art doesn't have to be important to you. There are other things in life.
Depression is kind of a state of mind of 'things are bad.. but I don't really want to/can't change them -that much..' IME. Which to me has two fairly obvious elements that you can focus on changing.
