The M16 rifle is the standard-issue assault rifle of the United States military, adapted from the ArmaLite AR-15 and introduced in 1964, during the Vietnam War.
It has since been widely-exported around the world, and a large number of variants exists in both military service and the civilian market.

The M16 rifle can be distinguished from the shorter M4 carbine by the long handguard area toward the front of the weapon.
