Petals are modified leaves that surround the reproductive parts of most flowers.
Petals compose the floral structure called corolla, which has the main purposes of protecting the reproductive structures of the flower (stamen and pistil) and catching the attention of pollinators using colorful patterns and sometimes reflection of ultra-violet rays.
Many flowers have underdeveloped or absent petals, some of these compensate this by means of bracts (leaves with low degree of modification) or overdeveloped sepals (components of the calyx, which usually sustains the corolla).
Use "petals" for detached petals and "flower" if the petals still attached to the flower (if exist detached and attached petals in the same post, use both tags).
