Bowser, also known as King Koopa in Japan, is the primary antagonist of the Mario Bros. video game series developed by Nintendo. He is the leader of the turtle-like Koopa race, the commander of a massive army of minions of various species, and the arch-nemesis of Mario and Luigi. His plans usually involve kidnapping Princess Peach and attempting to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. In most of his appearances in the games, he is a huge, imposing figure with a yellow body, tan scales on his torso, short red hair and horns, sharp teeth, and a spiky green shell on his back. He also wears black armbands and bracelets with spikes.

While in most of the Mario series he serves as the main antagonist, his role has been somewhat flexible across different games. He has been portrayed as both a monsterous, cold-hearted villain and a boastful, buffoonish blowhard. He has been a temporary ally to Mario on several occasions, usually when a larger threat overwhelms both Mario and himself, and he also appears a playable character in many of the spinoff Mario games. He has a rarely seen emotional side that is mostly brought out by his son Bowser Jr..
