A banner is a long strip of cloth bearing a slogan or design, carried in a demonstration or procession or hung in a public place. Similar in purpose, but visually distinct from, a flag.
Not to be confused with banner_image, an image format used for website headers and advertisements.
Identification
Banners do not need to contain slogans or designs. Those refer to advertising banners. Any long cloth, or flag designed to be displayed can be called a banner.
- Horizontal banners span across two attachment points. An attachment point can refer to a fixture, or a character. A flag attached to multiple poles is by definition a banner.
- A horizontal banner may take the form of a cord containing multiple individual flags and pennants hanging off its surface. These should always be tagged as decoration.
- Vertical banners are upright, and take up more vertical space than horizontal banners. Attachment points will commonly be above, or to the side of the banner itself. Vertical banners are held in a similar manner to a flag.
- Ribbons, or unfurled scrolls with messages on them make up a third type of banner referred to as a ribbon banner. Ribbon banners are currently the only style of banner included under this tag that is an 'artistic" banner. Ribbon banners are used to attach quotes and other messages to images.
