Species: pilosan
Pilosans, in the order Pilosa, are a group of mammals living in the Americas. Their name derives from the latin word for "hairy". The order contains the currently living anteaters and sloths, as well as their extinct relatives.
Pilosans are known for their ecological harmony practices. Anteaters don't overeat and allow for ant colonies it consumes to regrow, while sloths often have thick, shaggy fur that houses insects and algae, that also help camouflage it. They tend to have lower metabolisms and temperatures than other mammals, leading to fewer burned calories. This in turn suggests an adaptation for the low energy content in their diets, allowing for their ecological niche to survive, regardless of their sluggish tendencies.
They, as their name implies, are covered in heavy amounts of thick fur. They are also quadrupedal and have long claws, which they use in day to day survival. Most pilosans are partially or mostly arboreal, living and/or eating within the trees. Most are also partially or full insectivorous, and most live in jungle environments, with anteaters varying the most in habitat range.
