The latest in a long line of shamanistic road warriors, Laika bears her family's curse. Upon menarche, she inherited her mother's power, becoming immortal: Whenever she suffers a mortal injury, she instead passes through the spirit realm and reforms at the last bone memorial she visited. What some would regard as a blessing, she regards as a curse - one that will pass to Puppy, her daughter, once she experiences her first menstruation.

Much of it is tied to her family's turbulent history, chafing under the strain of responsibility she didn't ask for, and losing eight daughters to the fever that passes the curse on - or kills the child. She says their names like a prayer - Mila. Carly. Isla. Ava. Brisa. Kaila. Alani. Iris. - and explicitly refused to give Puppy a name, trying to not get attached. Another issue is that after Iris Laika swore she'd never get pregnant again, but was forced by The Elder and Maya, who argued someone needed to succeed Laika as the guardian of Where We Live.

Despite that, Laika formed the greatest bond with her, trying to give Puppy as normal an upbringing as she could. This included trying to keep Maya at a distance, to prevent her from forcing Puppy to grow up too fast.
