So it turns out if you want to change your name (marriage, adoption, divorce, trying to hide past, get rid of deadname, lost drunken bet, delusions of being The Batman, whatever reason someone could have) the cost to change it varies greatly depending where you are in the states even though the paperwork is the same. The "Name Change Filing Fee Waivers" ranges from as low as 10 USD in Alaska to as high as 500 USD in California.

As much as I'd like to get rid of my current IRL identity, I'm not in any feasible position to go through with it.
