I was desperate for gas. I was down to 2 miles left according to my meter.

Vulfy, a friendly caution about running fuel levels to very low/dog forbid empty: the price you pay will really pay is in having to replace an in-tank fuel pump. The fuel acts as a coolant and lubricant for electric pumps (as they are meant to be immersed); the only time I ever see a dead (admittedly Japan/import) fuel pump is on the hook, with a low-to-empty tank, and a cranks but no-start condition.

Running 2 jobs is running ragged, I know; running low once in a blue moon is just life, and probably not overly harmful. Now, running consistently low as an OCD hyper-miler, or worse doing so regularly out of laziness is really bad. Modern (and I mean new) cars just cannot take punishment or neglect like they used to, so my advice to anyone is to never run a fuel tank below a 1/4 tank, price hunting or no, just for longevity.

It goes to show that all of us can’t afford nice things…
