That’s like saying:

“Am I a rapper? Yes. Do I write poetry? No.”

Ok so like imagine an airplane. There's all sorts of buttons, levers, and switches all over the place. I don't know what any of these do. But by chance, if I pull levers the levers and flick the switches in just the right way, I can probably make this plane fly. That's how I draw.

Since I've been in the cockpit for a while, I can kinda tell which lever to pull and what buttons to press to achieve adequate lift. But I don't know what these buttons actually do mechanism wise, or what they are called. And there's still a ton of other stuff I haven't touched in the plane. I could press any of these buttons to see what would happen, or better yet, I could look up what they are. Unfortunately, it turns out I really hate sitting in flight class or reading the enclosed instruction manual.

if nothing else, you're quite good at creating complex metaphorical scenarios

Sounds like your learning style is primarily based around experience. You might find it helpful to follow along with tutorials for whatever you want to learn to do. After you have that down, you can mess around and put your own flair on it.

(This reminds me of when I was learning Linux. "Should I put /home in a separate partition?" "A topic of holy wars!"
