Put the drive back into old laptop. It's doing the check disk for for errors thing. Good so far.

Also for the new laptop, finally disabled the blasted touch pad.

Put the drive back into old laptop, still boots into Windows(though still no working mouse/kb), so promising. Don't know how I can recover the data yet, though.
