remember when we used to send messages by mail and wait 3 to 5 business days for it to get sent and another 3 to 5 days to get a reply? Crazy times, innit?

before telephones?
...
actually... this feels like a weird random thought but, how did people even end up meeting anyone that lived far enough away that physically mailing a letter was the most effective method of contact?
I feel like, even when I was in school learning how to format a letter, I wondered "when am I really ever going to use this?". because like, I feel the only time I'd consider writing an actual letter is for business/official stuff (which you're going to format slightly different from a personal letter anyway), or uhh... contacting someone in prison, I guess? in almost every other situation in-person or over the phone would be considerably easier.
