My vehicle : Metro Tehran
It's cheap, cool and does not need petrol.

I drive one of these. It's a stick shift, which means I'm a cool guy.
Before I got that car, the smallest vehicle I'd ever driven was a Mercury Mariner.

Since I have a lot of money, I rent one of these with a different driver everytime I need it.
And since I'm a really good person I share it with many people! :D
Just kidding. I use the bus because on this place, everybody gets so damn crazy when they drive. Plus, I don't have a car.

In case you're not joking, there's more to it than simply "Americans are rich and lazy so they all use cars to get around." Have you seen a picture of the United States? It's fucking huge, and if you don't live right in the middle of a megacity, good luck walking anywhere. It would take me almost an hour just to walk to the nearest store, and I live in what's classified as a metropolitan area.
Public transportation is almost nonexistent outside of cities.

Okay, I'll just take six hours to walk to school every day and another six to get back.
And when I want lunch on a weekend I'll go on an hour-long walk to the nearest Subway and take another hour to walk back, since according to you that's the only way to avoid being lazy.

Either you are so slow that you couldnt move faster than a WWI super heavy tank, or the city was okay with building one college for several million people.

Aurel, where do you expect to go with this argument? Do you think I am the one who decided it was a good idea to expand the suburbs in the 1940's? Do you think I enjoy commuting every day and spending a ton of money on gas?
Or do you just enjoy antagonizing people?

Going to ignore anything else said because it's pointless drivel; I live in a rather medium sized city which is ~10km (~6.2 miles)across, you do not "walk" from one end of another in one hour, you barely go from one end to slightly farther away from that end.
And that is nowhere near the dimensions of a supercity which can easily reach 20km (12 miles) or more, and then you have millions of people on the same street so you can't just walk briskly, you need to wait for traffic lights, avoid slower people, go around construction work, etc. etc.
Not everybody lives in an area where you can throw a stone from one end of the city to another or where you don't see another person outside past bedtime.

Every time I manage to come out of the Metropolis I'm living in {takes about 1 hour to exit the city, I live exactly in the middle of the city}, I see nothing but endless desert.
Depending on which part of the US we are talking about, forest, water, mosquitos, mountains, flat plains, or just more houses are also likely to be found outside of the city.

No, I didn't mean that. I meant the "He knows all the things" part.
The "suburbs" thing is really awful, American governors should have been spreading cities instead of building homes around it.
Anyway, most cities have a public transport(at least buses) and all metropolises have their own Metro lines. The more people use public transport, the cleaner the air will be, and the less chubbier they'll become. XD XD
A side question nimm: Could a banned user recieve Dmails? What about answering them?

honestly i wish i could have a car. i have to walk every day around 5 kilometers to school and back and additional 2 kilometers if i need to buy food. i have flat feet which causes often all sort of joint and muscle problems in my legs if i use my legs a lot. worst part is that i cannot really let my legs rest when these problems occur because i still need to go to school.

They're not always useful, though. I live somewhere that has decent to good public transit, by the standards of the US, but where I need to go and where the transit system goes are very different things. Damned if I'm going to replace a half hour drive (which I can start at any time) with an hour on the bus, a half hour on the train, and a mile of walking (adding up to over two hours once you account for transfer time), on a bus that only runs every half hour.
As a side note, buses are less efficient than cars in terms of energy per passenger-mile, except when they're full. But for a bus system to be useful, it can't only operate during the times that the buses will be full. There's a lot of mostly-empty driving around, which is (in terms of energy use, and therefore emissions) extremely inefficient. From an emissions standpoint, buses are not the winner. Replacing everyone's cars with a really good bus system would do bad things to the air quality.

I have flat feet, and I'm a marathon runner :)
Our highschool P.E. teacher was a really fast and muscular person, a complete winner in sports, and when he told me that he has "flat feet", I said myself: I can do it too.
So now I run a marathon, and the only problem I have with my running, is shortness of breath, because of Scheuermann's disease. {You don't have it right? You're one level upper than me :D }
So do what I did: Consider that flat feet has to do nothing with your sports life, even it being running ;)

no, doctors have actually said that my occasional leg issues are caused by my flat feet. flat feet affect on everyone differently and for me they cause that i have a bit unusual posture and my legs move in wrong way when i walk. and that causes wearing in wrong places and pains. sometimes the pains are so bad that i cannot walk at all.
that is not something i can avoid just by changing my attitude.

Yes, because people have unlimited time. With 8h of work, 8h of sleep you have whooping 8h left per day, now add cooking and eating for 2h, personal hygiene 2h, and you're left 4h.
Now expect someone to walk 2h in one direction to go to work.
As nice as public transport is from an economic point of view it majorly sucks if the transport isn't perfectly fit to your requirements, and it seldom fits into a tight time table.alirezatm said:

I also don't know a lot about the US healthcare system except for that it blows chunks, but would a visit to a physiotherapist really be out of your reach, even if it's just for orientation?

i live in finland. not us. and as i said, i have barely motivation to eat, so i do not have the motivation to go see a physiotherapist. also i am fairly sure that the closest actual physiotherapist is 50 kilometers away from where i live. i do not have money for bus and i cannot walk that.

Oh, righto, I just tend to assume everyone here's from the US unless I know otherwise. Anyway, not trying to be rude, but it feels to me like you have some mental issues that keep you locked in this vicious circle of "can't do this, because can't do that". Perhaps that should be sorted out first, and I really urge you to do so, because it doesn't sound like you have to be this unhappy. :(
Also, forgive me for asking, but not being able to pay for a bus ride? You can pay your electric bill and internet connection, and I saw you talk about ME3 lately so you were able to afford a gaming-grade computer. Do buses run on liquid gold in Finland?
Least money can't really be an issue when it comes to the actual professional help, because Finnish healthcare is largely publicly funded, like a proper first-world country. If you can barely walk and have a low income, I assume they're going to help you without loading you with bills.

Jugofthat said:

Pretty much.
Gasoline prices are about 2.5 higher in Europe than in US. Maintenance costs are also far higher in Fennoscandia, partially because of the climate. And the population is so sparse that the ticket prices need to be high to be profitable. Long-distance busses often end up running empty or with just a couple of passengers.
I've seen some North Americans complain about high gas prices. They have no idea how good they have it...
Updated by anonymous
Oh believe me, being Dutch myself I know all about ridiculous fuel prices. I believe the recent oil crash has meant US prices dropped to about $2 a gallon for gas, right? Lucky bastards (though it's a good thing because of all the massive distances and the overall lacking public transport system).
Many areas of Finland being sparsely populated was something I hadn't really taken into account though. You're right, that makes a difference.

i have professional diagnosis and part of the mental issue i have is executive dysfunction which renders my motivation permanently to near zero unless i am 100% into the thing i am about to do. and since i was born with this, theres very little i can do about it.
Also, forgive me for asking, but not being able to pay for a bus ride? You can pay your electric bill and internet connection, and I saw you talk about ME3 lately so you were able to afford a gaming-grade computer. Do buses run on liquid gold in Finland?
i moved on my own few weeks ago so i havent even paid my first bill and i wont be able to pay my bills before i get my financial aid request approved which will just barely cover my living fees. i do not pay for my internet, my mom does. and the internet i use is my iphone's internet (and before you ask, the phone was birthday gift from few years ago). and i got my computer as graduation gift from my mom about year ago. and bus tickets in the middle of nowhere i live are really expensive.

Fair play, of course I was kind of filling in the details without really knowing anything about your personal life. Sorry about that.
Birth disorders are of an entirely different level, not much you can do about those if there's no medication (preferably something that doesn't have a bunch of negative side effects) to tackle the symptoms.
