I have written many fanfics {including two published books} in Persian and I'm too lazy to translate them.

I don't read fanfics, I spend my time reading "real litreature" instead. XD XD

I used to write quite a bit when i was in college/high school. Unfortunately what happens is I tend to want to be immersive and accurate to the universe that I am writing about and then start to obsess about subtle nuances like "Is this location geographical correct within the context of this story's universe?" and "Would this be something that <Character> would say or do given their established personality?" and then I start to lose the thread of my own creation delving into the world I am writing about and generally give up half way through...lol.

i usually just read fanfiction. speaking of, while i haven't really looked for anything new to read much i still have a few fics here at fimfiction that get occasional updates. afaik that one series, stories in stone, is STILL ongoing. that one in particular is really good and worth checking out. it's quite lengthy though.

you can find Stories in Stone here. in order: Luna's Royal Guard, Memories of Twilight, then Lost Empire. those are the main series.

i also have rad super mario fanfics, the longest by far is by the Super Mario Apocalypse series by zhaich. after at least 8 years now, he recently finished the final (60th) chapter. this one is a very good fic as well.

lately though, i've been more preoccupied with things like playing Dragon's Dogma on xbox360 so i haven't been reading near as much as i used to.

if anyone knows of any other great mlp or mario fanfics, feel free to let me know and i might check them out. far as genre goes, i'm not real picky.

Yes.

I'm writing a short smut Furfrou story at the moment, and I had an idea (er, an update to an old idea that ended up fizzling out) that I'm excited about involving Suicune. Not much else in-progress at the moment.

Fan fiction only seems like a good idea if you want to get the hang of writing if you have little experience. I don't understand the people who go all out spending a ton of time trying to make their magnum opus through fan fiction.

It's not that different from regular authors.

50 Shades started as a Twilight fanfic... so I guess it works out for some.

I guess a novel that mixes elements from Twilight and 50 Shades could make a lot of money...
(a dom werewolf + a dom vampire who both love a teenage human female, but she just can't decide who she'd rather be tortured by)

Using someone else's characters and setting just seems like a potential inhibitor.

Yeah, but that book is objectively terrible!

There are a lot of factors to consider, I think.

In some respects, trying to write new material for an existing character can be more difficult than writing original fiction, because the character has established traits, an established voice, and so on, so it requires you to match it perfectly if you want to write the story without jarring your reader.

For smut stories, often you don't want to devote a lot of time to world-building, because that's not the point of the story, so fan-fiction works well for those sorts of things.

Fan-fiction can also be useful if you are trying to work on a particular aspect of your writing. If for example you want to work on, specifically, characters, choosing a known setting might be useful, because it lets you focus on the one element you want to improve.

Furthermore, from a practical standpoint, starting out, fan-fiction comes along with a pre-established audience. So it can be useful from that perspective as well.

Original settings have plenty of advantages, don't get me wrong, but I just think it's wrong to discount fan-fiction without considering what benefits it might have.

Agreed. Then there are those who make good books about historical figures.

I write fanfiction for my friend's animations. Don't know if they still count as fanfics if they are in the description of an image or animation though...

Nah, a good majority of them feel unbearably dorky. I prefer original characters and settings, but even then~

Writing a Pokémon fanfiction (over 45,000 words so far) which I'll never publish. It's only good to pass the time when you have really nothing to do.

You know, I used to think that way as well. I never thought I would actually publish upload my story for public eyes to see. But around halfway through my first story, I thought otherwise.

I try to write a fanfiction, problem is: It looks more like a science report then literature.

My next problem is that I explain too much. Like "This happens because of that; this works because this reacts with those"

Dialouges aren't my thing either :/

I started my, eh, "Furry career", writing an Everquest 2 fan fic. 'Dem sexy Iksar lizards, mmm. But looking back on those now, I dislike my old work, and have long since moved onto other things.

Pretty much everything by Estee. If I had to recommend a single story of hers, Five Hundred Little Murders. Everything written by GhostOfHeraclitus (start with Whom The Princesses Would Destroy). Cold Hearted. The Princess of Books, and the sort of sequel The Demense of the Reluctant Twilight Sparkle.

Other good authors to check out include Arad, Bad Horse, Cast-Iron Caryatid, Cold in Gardez, CvBrony, Daetrin, Eakin, Horse Voice, Skywriter, Titanium Dragon (check his blogs, he does regular reviews), and Tundara.

I'm actually writing an MLP/Pokémon/Kingdom Hearts fanfic alongside two other authors on fanfiction.net.

hmmm... anyone know of any good mega man (X, zero or ZX preferably) fanfics?

I probably won't be checking that out. Kingdom Hearts does nothing for me, and I'd be back on FFN. Fimfiction's UX is so much better than FFN's (or any other fanfiction site, really) it's ridiculous.

Their UX definitely appears more organized. Though at the moment, I don't have an MLP story in the works that is entirely my own.

Come to think of it, my stories don't really exist anywhere outside of fanfiction.net, and I have been thinking of uploading them elsewhere for attention's sake.

Try AO3. That's where I upload my stuff as well.

I have short fics for Bleach, Fruits Basket, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, Ah My Goddess, and Spirited Away on Mediaminer.

They are scattered under three or four different names, and quality varies as they were written between 1996-2005. (I'd have to hunt to find them now, can't even remember what names I used.)

Recently I've done more in the way of (mostly short, cute one-shot) MLP fics on fimfiction. Don't really take writing seriously, but I have been having fun playing with different ideas.

i'll be sure to check them out when i can and... it's long since been deleted from fimfiction.net (author left the site at some point iirc and that's all i know) but let me see here...

OH, so theres an archive for pony stuff now, is there? gonna have to add that to my bookmarks i guess. (scratch that, already had it bookmarked. >.>)

anyway, found it. Our Last Goodbye by RagingSemi

click past the age check thingy and there you have one of my all time favorite mlp:fim fanfics. :) it's a bit long and has some clop scenes but it's REALLY good.

Not exactly a deal-breaker. Skimming over it...I'm pretty sure I've read it before, actually. Huh.

If you're okay with some sex in your story, I'd recommend Maiden's Day (only story with clop on my public Favorites bookshelf), Cadence In A Minor (has some sexual scenes but more fan disservice than fanservice), When A Pony Calls and sequel (warning: starts out comedic, but Seven Fates is out to break the protagonist), and In The Garden of Good and Evil (...I should probably stop with the dark recommendations...). If you want more sex in your story, Sex, Lies, and Cowpony Hats is great, as is Her Majesty's Secret Service, Prince of Zebras, and Ember's.

I read the one about Balto becoming Steele's bitch. There's not much to it, just Balto getting repeatedly ass raped by him.

eh, i'm ok with clopfics but i usually have e621 if that's what i want to see.

as for dark lol check out the Dark Descent trilogy by wolokai. iirc it DOES have a good ending at the end...of the 3rd story but as it's based around the cupcakes story expect things to get dark, grim, and horrifying for quite some time before things start to get better (if you can call...well, i won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it before). overall it's pretty good actually. another fave of mine only this time of the grimdark variety.

another good series is Maledictum Insania by nero Darkard

i also have one faved that our favorite wasp may like if you're into that kind of stuff (changelings can be...freaky sometimes). somewhere...ah, found it:

Hard Reset by Eakin warning: eggs in the heads of ponies!

and lastly, heres a little something for all you're suffering. lol ok, for real this time, just have a look through my favorites and you may find some stuff you like, some you don't, and some that's just "meh" to you.

warning: my favorites bookshelf contains everything from harmless slice-of-life to grimdark drama to pinkamena paranoia/insanity to...discord to stuff even The Doctor might or might not approve of much (time travel related stuff) lol

oh and for all you clopfic fans heres a nice one: One Tight Knight or How to Polish Your Lance by bronystories

what else...oh, be careful of george, hes crazier than discord lol

Check out Hard Reset 2: Reset Harder. It's basically Hard Reset meets Primer.

I also noticed that I haven't mentioned The Writing on the Wall, which I recommend to everyone. But there's a huge spoiler in the very first comment, so don't even look at the comments. I've linked directly to the chapter to make that easier. It's only 6200 words.
