Topic: Windows 10

We all know what a fucking flop was windows 8!

Windows 10 is going to be released in a few hours, how do you feel about it?
Could it beat the successful windows 7? Or...Not?

Updated by treos

Windows 7 suits my intents and purposes. Probably going to keep using it until a major hardware upgrade warrants a newer operating system.

Updated by anonymous

Looks a helluva lot better than 8 or 8.1, which I never had thank goodness, but had the misfortune of using. Hopefully 10 will be better.

Updated by anonymous

Have Windows 8.1 myself so I'm really looking forward to updating it. Bringing back the start menu immediately makes Windows 10 better in my opinion. :)

I resisted Windows forever, until Diablo made me embrace '95.

I held on to '98SE for as long as I could. Dual-booting DOS games eventaully became passé.

2K Advanced Server and I were great friends, at work and at home. Ran dual processors like a champ, even tho not much was written for 2x procs.

ME showed up as a one night stand; got the heave-ho when no drivers could ever work.

Accepted, yet did not fully embrace XP Pro. We were cordial, sure, but never a romance. Funny, how a great friend of your friends never really becomes your own friend. Still, better gaming compatibility than 2K AS.

XP and Vista had a bastard child that I took in as an orphan; Vista may have been a Bad Parent, yet its Basic offspring was a decent enough adoption (as it was essentially XP Home SP3). Simple and unassuming, and clever enough to not lose that final 512K of RAM.

7 is the current standard that all other OSs will be held to; maybe not the best ever, yet in the age of more flashy flashes and explode-y explosions, 7 is holding its own.

When even Mac is becoming more PC-based, why the fuck did Microsoft try to become something else with 8? A darling to the tablet fan, perhaps, yet I feel that most touching should be done in the privacy and comfort of one's own bedroom. No start menu is a no-starter for me.

Right off the bat, Microspooge has poisoned my opinion of Windows 10 when they snuck that annoying little icon into our notification areas under the radar with not only one, but two Windows updates. Bastards.

History has shown that most Miscrosoft OSs are functional enough, with a couple of black sheep in the family, sure (but don't we all have at least on of those?) Until PC architecture is radically changed, we will continue to throw more and more RAM at things, and hope that Bill Gates will not throw us to the wolves again.

i loved windows XP as it was the best thing before the 64-bit system (then microsoft pretty much killed it by killing all support for it >:( ). been on windows 7 since and it's not bad. it has trouble with some older games and stuff but it's not bad...not bad.

windows 8...nope, not messing with that metro crap. i use a pc not a pc/tablet hybrid thingy.

windows 9...iirc still some metro stuff so again, NO!

windows 10...last i saw in a youtube video, it look mostly like a normal pc OS but still had a bit of the stupid metro stuff so i'm not entirely sure about it.

bear in mind, i mainly use my computer(s) for gaming, browsing the internet, music, watching videos. that kind of stuff. i don't need the Metro when normal has worked perfectly fine for me for years.

I had 10 in my hands on Saturday, it looks pretty decent from playing around with it for a bit. If you're using 7 you'll feel right at home.

The biggest changes I saw where to the start menu, where you can now expand the right side into a quickstart list, you have tiles which you can sort and those tiles open programs you can define. Or quickly access other functions in the settings.
Also interesting from a gaming perspective is the new DirectX 12, they finally managed to give it multicore support, and drastically reduced overhead, making it a lot faster than any version before it.
They also added functionality to use NVidia and AMD cards at the same time so I'm curious how well that will work.

I'll definitely switch to 10, but not in the first 2 to 4 weeks, I rather have a couple million people trouble shoot hardware/drivers similar to mine before I dive in.

I hated using everything before Vista (despise XP on every computer/build I've ever used it on, and I'm increasingly baffled at how buggy 98/95 are now). Vista saw a lot of improvements and conveniences that XP lacked, but still had much of the legacy support/interface bogging it down and contributed to it feeling unfinished and half-assed. I'm glad that Windows 7 refined them and made the OS more stable overall, but it always felt too much like XP to me to like using it.

8 and 8.1 in vmware have been rock solid for me and I'm looking forward to checking out 10.

Yes, I'm one of the few that liked Vista and hated XP. We do exist :V

Windows 8 is actually really decent with ClassicShell and beside the lack of the start menu, I really like this version even if I was one big fanboy of WIndows XP for a long time. I'm also looking foward Windows 10, however I'm a little scared about compatibility issues, especially with SAI and games

Updated by anonymous

I will stick with 7 until official support ends.

By then, compatibility workarounds should be out for all the old videogames I still cherish.

Windows 9 Is an old windows that's why the number is 10 I want install it I cant wait, I have 8.1

Windows 8.1 has an issue where the thumbnail cache deletes itself often. This is annoying when you have a lot of images. There was a simple fix for this in Windows 7 but not 8/8.1. If 10 doesn't have the problem then i'll upgrade.

Updated by anonymous

I'll prob upgrade after about a month or so if nothing goes wrong because, why not, it's free.

Updated by anonymous

Nah. Not interested. I'm good with 7

I don't even know how 10 looks like anyway

I looks better than 8 and actually has a start menu, supposed to be faster and more secure, but I'm too comfy with Windows 7 lol.

Updated by anonymous

I think you can still get it for free for up to a year past release, so I'll probably wait a couple of months or so (because I'm really paranoid about borking my computers) before getting it. There's no hurry after all, and there should be better support for it a few months later, so I won't have to break my head on the wall if I do encounter any problems.

But that's the thing, we don't have to, at all, like, and even if we did, you can easily roll back.

Money, win 10 will follow a subscription service so they want to get that rolling, as well that it's cheaper to only patch 1 OS instead 5 different OS with different versions.

Windows 10? Holy shit that must be some seriously outdated shovelware. I mean they already came out with windows 98! That's going back at least a hundred digits.

Wait, I thought MS said they weren't going to do the subscription anymore... I'm kind of confused. I remember reading somewhere that they're just going to be doing the same old license system they've been doing the past Windows-ses, once the 'free year' is up.

I'll be with Windows 7 for while and i'll get the Windows 10 someday!

It's a much smaller installation, and I'm tired of Windows 7 using up half of my SSD drive. So I might switch. Though I'll probably wait a few months first, so they can iron out the worst problems.

I still didn't get any notification for the update and the icon disappeared. My only guess would be I'm forbidden to get the update because I ignored the one Skype update a long time ago, and there's no way I'm going to update Skype to this ugly recent version

I'm still wary that it'll royally jack something up, or refuse to install a vital driver. I don't know how it keeps your data though.

It keeps all your data, but you can also just get a 30 day trial of Acronis True Image and make a backup of your OS drive / partition. 30 days should be enough to test it out and to easily roll back without having to pay anything.

That thing is from the Technical Preview, which had the "keylogger" to improve Windows, which was kind of the entire point of the Technical Preview and was stated in every EULA, TOS, and Privacy Guide.

But, you know, people and reading.

Everything in those things can be changed, the keylogger doesn't exist, Updates can be set to notify you instead of automatically installing, sending feedback can be disabled as well.
I can't say anything about the wifi, though. I do not connect my machine through wifi, and I can't seem to find the option otherwise.

Eh, tru dat. I don't even have the option/thing to "reserve" my copy of win 10 anyway (not that I want it either, I'm good with 7)

Unfortunately, I don't have the space to do an entire image of the HDD or OS partition, I've only two HDDs and no money for a third one, not enough space, so that's an issue. If only Microsoft allowed this to be installed on another HDD...

Windows 10 is practically spyware considering how much privacy invading "features" they've put in there. I'm currently on Windows 8.1 but god damn it is the most unstable system I've ever used, soon going back to Windows 7 although I hate aero. DX12 games aren't going to be released for at least another year or so anyways.

You can't disable their malware "protection" because if you disable it, it automatically turns itself on after a bit. You also can't disable diagnostic and usage data sending unless you use the enterprise edition. And don't even mention WiFi Sense, putting _optout in my SSID, jeez... Even if I'm wrong regarding everything above, I still wouldn't trust Microsoft's systems on release - better leave it alone for some time until they iron out all the bugs which I'm sure there will be plenty.

from this article

"Hundreds of commenters on sites such as Hacker News and Reddit have criticised default settings that send personal information to Microsoft, use bandwidth to upload data to other computers running the operating system, share Wi-Fi passwords with online friends and remove the ability to opt out of security updates."

really, microsoft?

"Many of the complaints relate to the new personalised adverts embedded in Windows 10. When the OS is installed, Microsoft assigns the user a unique advertising ID, which it ties to the email address registered with the company. That email address is also associated with a raft of other services, such as the company’s productivity and communication programs, as well as app downloads and cloud-storage uploads."

i bet that's partly where the personal information comes into play, right? since we all know everyone loves having ads shoved in they're faces. nice, microsoft, real nice.

hey, guess what, solitaire is now a freemium game as of windows 10.

i rather like my privacy tyvm. and NOT having ads everywhere.

well, it might've been tempting to try windows 10 but...now it's MUCH less tempting. :/ guess i'll be sticking with 7 even on my next pc (whenever i eventually get that "next" pc. >.>).

edit: scary default settings

Upgraded from Windows 8.1 but it was slow as molassis. Killed a few non-vital processes, defragmented it and now it works better. Still not as fast as before though.

I'm really enjoying the return of the start-menu and a lot of unnecesary menus that were a pain in Windows 8 has thankfully been removed.

a comment from that 2nd page i linked above (warning, good sized text wall):

be sure to READ THE LICENSE CONTRACT.

Click on search>settings icon>Other privacy settings>Privacy statement

Then you will get the atrocious contract, including, between many offenses, this:

(google "Microsoft Privacy Statement" if you do not have Windows 10, and want the full text)

"Reasons We Share Personal Data
We share your personal data with your consent [...]"

Ask any lawyer. That does mean that you are giving your consent to Microspyware for your personal data to be "shared". It is a statement of fact: Microspyware shares your personal data, and you consent to it.

It does not says that you will be asked for your consent, it says that you consent to it.

It does not impose any limitation on the "sharing". Anything goes.

"[...]we share personal data among Microsoft-controlled affiliates and subsidiaries. We also share personal data with vendors or agents working on our behalf[...]"
"[...]we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders)[...]"

It also says:

"Personal Data We Collect"
[...]
"Name and contact data. We collect your first and last name, email address, postal address, phone number, and other similar contact data."

"[...] the content of your documents, photos, music or video [...] the content of your communications sent or received [...]

subject line and body of an email,
text or other content of an instant message,
audio and video recording of a video message, and
audio recording and transcript of a voice message you receive or a text message you dictate"

"Contacts and relationships"

"Credentials. We collect passwords, password hints, and similar security information"

Note that it does not says that it collect the passwords you provide to Microsoft. It just says "passwords". ANY password.

"[...] (GPS) data, as well as data identifying nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi hotspots, [...] location derived from your IP address [...] a city or postal code level."

"[...]age, gender, country and preferred language[...]"

"Interests and favorites. [...] such as the teams you follow [...] the stocks you track [...] In addition to those you explicitly provide, [...] may also be inferred or derived from other data we collect. "

THE STOCKS YOU TRACK. That would be absolutely illegal without a contract.
ASIDE THE INFO YOU EXPLICITLY PROVIDE. That means that Microsoft gets the right to survey you by any means, aside Windows 10.
It does not need to survey you only trought a computer, phone, or website running Windows 10, it can survey you trough any way.

There is no opt out.

"Usage data. [...] such as the features you use, the items you purchase, the web pages you visit, and the search terms you enter. [...]"

"[...]This also includes data about your device, including IP address, device identifiers, regional and language settings, and data about the network, operating system, browser or other software you use [...]"

Worse, there is another clause that says that MICROSOFT WILL CHANGE ANY CLAUSE AT WILL.
"Changes to This Privacy Statement
We will update this privacy statement [...]"

So, by using Windows 10, or any MS product or website, including Microsoft Account or Bing (which you are forced to use each time yo do a local search in W10), you are signing a BLANK CONTRACT IN FAVOR OF MICROSOFT.

You effectively give Microsoft unlimited rights. Microsoft can walk into your house and claim it. It can demand any of your properties, any payment, any personal debt, anything.

edit:

yet another link

microsoft spokesperson: "To effectively provide Windows as a service, Microsoft collects some performance, diagnostic and usage information that helps keep Windows and apps running properly,” said the spokesperson.

“Microsoft does not sell this data or use it for advertising purposes.”

PFFFT lol sure they don't. >.> so then, why is microsoft making ads a part of windows 10 again and how are they customizing said ads towards each users "interests"?

everyone knows that whole "X company will not sell you're personal data and/or use it for advertising purposes" line is complete BS. it's always bs.

I can deal with privacy, I couldn't wait for 10 and I manually upgrade it and thanks to 10 my Wi-Fi is fixed like it used to be, anyways 8.1 sucks compared to 10. Recommend not using Cortana she is the one responsible for stealing privacy

I personally switched over to Win10 just to test it out, and most of the post in regarding the "telemetry" is now able to be changed... Not sure if it's because I have a high end version... Win10Pro, but I've disabled it, and never enabled MSFT Account on it, and won't. My Local Account was saved during the transfer, the only issue is that when Avast updated today, the windows defender immediately was like, Your virus software isn't active, no sh*t, it's updating.

My impression of it is that it runs smoothly and only a few issues, and I just need to recalibrate a few things. (Mass Effect Garrus line?)

Any whom, Kinda sad that If you want to use Cortana the whole user account HAS to be on a MSFT account, which heads up, if you use Bit Locker and sign up for the One Drive feature, it'll share your Bit Locker Key in the One Drive. Therein rendering your key insecure, and your key's integrity up to have it stolen/used/legally taken via warrant search of MSFT's servers/services which is in the EULA and ToS.

I don't use bitlocker, but for those who do and are planning on using the One Drive feature, be wary of it.

For me it just is a fancied UI interface looped in ontop of itself... Why do I need 2-3 places to change the same setting? Why is it I can get to the classic Control panel one way but not another? Why so many different words for the same setting?

Pros:
Fast boot time, Simple to understand interface, DX12

Cons:
Multiple switches for same setting, MSFT Account requests (If you don't already log in with one) Though after you install and ignore it a few times it goes away.

nVidia drivers are uninstalled and going to the nVidia website the detection doesn't work for my setup atleast.

(after installing the latest drivers for my card, and all it loads games that I had installed fine, even a little faster, noticeably.)

The opt-out of browser metrics is on an external website :(

It's a very simple to grasp system, I enjoy the snapping features, seems to be optimized from Win7, and has elements that make me feel as if I'm using KDE (Linux Desktop Environment)

Two reasons I will be staying with 7 for a long, long time, just as people kept XP Pro for as long as possible (and probably a bit beyond).

I have a strong distaste for 8, and want to hold on to my Privacy settings just a little longer, just a little more tightly, before the world becomes analogous to that of Minority Report.

I'm using 10 now, at home. You can disable any and all privacy hacks. It does do a real good pitch at making you give up your privacy, but it's easy to disable it.

Don't use Cortana if you're worried about internet privacy. But, honestly, any Windows, especially 7, has the ability to read and send information to Microsoft.

Not a problem, as per the "privacy" stuff, I really don't do anything that isn't run of the mill simple things that a majority of folks do. When and if I need to do something like that I use TAILS, on a secure laptop, one without a drive. I've quite literally made my desktop to be a machine where I don't expect a supreme level of privacy though, I do want to avoid the simple, "leak" from happening, whether it be a chapter of my story being leaked early, or something like employers finding out my other clients.

In my opinion if you want privacy, on a computer, never ever, ever connect it to a computer network, or internet. Which in this day and age, besides some high level GIST computer techs, you won't have people do.

The reason I don't really like the Win10 stuff, in regards to information and data-collection is the same reason I moved off of Ubuntu when using a linux distro. Canonical began to use 3rd party information services to supply advertisments. While easy to opt out of and easy to remove entirely. That isn't my point, point is telemetrics on how I use Firefox, like plugins that I use, flash, html5 jquery, etc, I don't see a problem with giving Mozilla, as if there's an issue they fix it. But when it's tied to Website/Personal info I do. Which is where I feel Win10 crosses that line.

To me telemetrics are different then user data, and I agree to send certain information to developers, as I know it helps them. Like, wouldn't you share your tagged black-list with the admins here if say, you saw something tagged with a tag in your list that god-forbid showed up?

I just really wish I could figure out how to disable, on the network/data-link layer the password sharing feature, without having to specifically say to anyone on my WLAN, not to use a MSFT Account with family share on.

EDFDarkAngel1 Said:

I agree with that to avoid using Cortana; however, I just want to restate, I personally would use Cortana, provided it didn't want to change the local account to a msft account entirely. I like voice-to-text features, I find them to be very cool, and understandably a vulnerability to privacy. Yet, still I guess I'm fixated by computer systems like JARVIS, in Iron Man, or the like.

I don't have a problem with some information getting back to the developers or the IP [Intellectual Property] Company, so long as it doesn't reveal personal statistics or anything incriminating in any sense of that word. Social/Business/Legal...

I personally know for a fact that the USAF still runs XP systems in their deep back end, but it's simply harder for some systems to immediately update just because of a supplier going, "Yeah, we're not supporting it."

Hope that this is seen as logical, and not fear mongering against Windows or 10, just we all take a certain liability when we use specific systems or programs.

If I could get OpenGL, and PlayOnLinux to work seamlessly, instead of having a HyperVisor Version of Windows do it better, I'd be on Unix/Linux Based systems always.

Not saying Mac is a bad OS, just doesn't fit my taste. If it works for you, it works. I can't hate on your system if it fits you, but for me it's crud.

The contents of that folder seem to vary from one person to the next (probably based on how the upgrade went) because for me it was only the old windows files, which I don't need because I got a full backup of the entire windows drive from shortly before I upgraded.

Find out the error code and search online for it. Found out that the Windows 10 upgrade files were missing/corrupted as Windows slowly compiles it with every update. I ended up had to delete the entire thing for it to re-download again and successfully install it.
