Topic: need help: problems vewing images

Posted under General

I am using Windows XP and was using Chrome v45 until i started getting the SSL error so i switched to Firefox v41. Now whenever i search for stuff like "Avian" or "Female" it'll load the page like normal but there won't be any thumbnails until i click on a link to a new page then they all pop up for like 3 seconds before it takes me to the new page. IE will go to E926 just fine and without this problem but will not go to E621. I've enabled and disabled all Add-ons for Firefox fixing the same problem IE has with E621, I entered Firefox's Safe Mode and got nothing, I'm not using a proxy server or even know what it is for that matter, I have no restricted sites in internet options or anti-virus, I've cleared all browsing history and cookies, And have absolutely no idea what to do next.

Q: Why are you posting this here? A: Because its only happening on this site. I've got no problem from Alphacoders' Wallpaper Abyss, Google images, or even the Rule34 website. So can anybody tell me what is going on? I've never posted on a forum before now and yet so specific is my problem that no FAQ can help me.

At the time of this post it'll be midnight so i won't be on for another 8-12 hours and i humbly apologize if i posted this in the wrong location.

There are a number of things that might cause issues like this, but based on what you've described from your troubleshooting it doesn't look like the issue stems from your computer. We have been having some trouble with the server connections over the past few days, so it's likely that this is what you are seeing.

Cloudflare is currently looking into some related issues, but I may be able to narrow this down a bit more if you are willing to answer a couple quick questions:

  • How long has this been happening?
  • Are you using a service like Google DNS or OpenDNS?
  • Do you happen to have a different computer/device on the same network you can test e621.net on? (for instance, your desktop computer compared to a tablet on the same network as your desktop computer)
  • Do you happen to have a way to test the same computer/device on a different network? (for instance, a cell phone on wifi compared to mobile data)

Install eSix Extend and check 'Apply the "HTTP Tweak" on every image' in the settings.
(fixed the problem for me)

Using Chrome v45 i started having problems with the SSL about a week ago. My power supply and USB ports died so it was offline for like 5 days. I get it back yesterday and it's still giving me the error so i finally said screw it and replaced it with Firefox v41. So i would say since 10/9/2015 ~6:00pm.

I have at least 5 different desktop computers to test this problem with but no tablets. I've tested the fallowing computers using the SFW E926.

HP Touchsmart, OS: Vista, Browser: Firefox v41, Result: no problem

Custom, OS: Windows 7 Professional, Browser: Firefox v40, Result: no problem

Custom, OS: Windows 7, Browser: Firefox v41, Result: no problem

Custom, OS: Windows 8, Browser: Firefox v41, Result: no problem

All of these computers including my own but excluding the HP have been custom built. I had to google what a DNS was so i don't think i have that and no i don't have a different network available to me to test anything.

EDIT: After typing all this out 2 things happened. First E926 works perfectly for reasons i cannot fathom. And secondly E621 won't load at all. It just sits there connecting indefinitely. I thought I fixed this yesterday by disabling incompatible extensions. *sigh* I think you may be right about Cloudflare. I figured if its only happening on my PC just after replacing the power supply and making the switch to Firefox then surely its got to be a local problem. Thank you for taking the time to help me.
Edit Edit: its back to not showing images again and still can't access e621. I tried eSix Extend and got nothing.

Edit Edit Edit: Wow... just wow... I'm speechless.......... turning off !Avast HTTPS scanning fixed all my problems. I feel cheated now. I don't know if i should jump for joy or have a small nuclear meltdown... I'm going to reinstall Chrome to see if its fixed there too. Once again i would like to thank you for your time and patience.

HTTPS scanning

I had no idea this was a thing. There are so many things that could go wrong here that I don't even know where to begin. :x

Glad to know you figured out the cause and managed to fix it. I'm definitely keeping this info in the back of my head for troubleshooting purposes.

Https scanning in anti virus software is done for a very simple reason: to scan for malicious code. The transmissions in SSL encoded streams are normally not intercepted by anything between browser and server, meaning any bad code that gets sent through it is, in a worst case scenario, executed directly in the browser where it's too late already. To prevent this from happening the AV solution intercepts SSL connections and runs them through their internal proxy thing (and causes technically a local man in the middle attack) to scan for malicious code.

That is, sadly, the only real option to safely scan SSL transmission, but the implementation is rather fickle depending on what programs and AV you're using.

I have been getting a similar problem except that the site doesn't open when i am using Opera browser it pops up this message:

"This webpage is not available
A secure connection cannot be established because this site uses an unsupported protocol."

I cleared the cookies and re-installed Opera several times, i even tried older versions of it, but the problem is still there. Then i decided to use Firefox and I noticed that Avast stops the access due ssl277549.cloudflaressl.com is not valid (whatever this mean) then in order to enter the site i have to turn off Avast shields, then everything loads ok, but i don't feel it good having to turn the shields off. Not sure if i must do something else or simply wait until an update for this cloudflare stuff.

As for the questions:

  • How long has this been happening?

A: since a couple of days.

  • Are you using a service like Google DNS or OpenDNS?

A: I was using Google DNS due having a different problem some months ago which is already solved, but i had forgotten shifting to it automatically use DNS, which i did now.

A: A: sadly, no, i have no other devices nor a different network to run the tests.
