Topic: Tag Alias: red_rocket -> animal_penis

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

It seems the current red_rocket tag is being used for a dog penis, and not the cooling/gas station in the fallout series, it doesnt seem to be tagged that often, why not fix that so red_rocket -> animal_penis as thats what it is?

The tag is also being used for pictures of literal red rockets, so this would cause mistags.

ya -1 just because people are using tags invalidly doesn't mean it should be aliased. If anything if it's a sole user who's been doing it recently do a report for tagging abuse

To avoid future issues, I think the tag should probably just become invalid. The tag is overwhelmingly used to refer to canine_penis to the point of being basically useless.

This seems like way too small an issue to bust out a disambiguation for, but I could understand creating red_rocket_(fallout) for the (literally four) posts that reference the Fallout thing:

post #767345 post #767350 post #1982237 post #1997416

These are the mis-tagged posts which contain a literal red rocket. Obviously, these ones should just lose the tag.

The rest of the images all have the appropriate canine_penis tag, so the tag could simply be removed from them.

Disambiguation tags aren't perfect solutions, being that they cause continual additional work to clean up. They also really aren't for typos or for giving leeway to people being dumb with meme tags.

We currently have 40 pages of posts from the *_(disambiguation) search. It rarely gets cleaned up as is, we really don't need to add more work onto it when it's unnecessary.

invalid_tag also needs additional work to clean up (granted there's a lot fewer posts currently with invalid_tag than *_(disambiguation)). However, what's worse is that when a tag is used that's aliased to invalid_tag, it can be very difficult for an uploader or someone editing tags to figure out which one they tried to add was actually invalid, or why its invalid. With a disambiguation, you can see what tag was wrong and can look at the wiki for hints on what's the right tag to use.

True, though the sort of work differs. The invalid_tag tag is easier to look up (doesn't require wildcard searches), and cleaning it up generally just involves taking a look at the tags, seeing if the image is tagged relatively thoroughly, and if not, tagging it a bit better, and removing the tag. Disambiguation tags require a wildcard search, figuring out what tag is relevant (because disambiguation tags are generally less visible than invalid_tag), often looking at the wiki to figure out what the correct tag that won't result in a disambiguation would be, as well as the aforementioned check-general-tag-quality-then-remove step that exists for invalid_tag.

It's a bit of extra work multiplied across every image it applies to, with a lot fewer people working on fixing it.

However, with all that said, I would still agree that invalid_tag is not a perfect solution. I would say that it is generally preferable to alias away a tag to a real tag, because this generally requires minimal cleanup, and that cleanup can also be done during regular searches.
