Topic: Acting classes for voice acting?

Posted under Off Topic

Hey everybody. I got a question for the voice actors (be you a beginner, an experienced v.a., or even a voice actor that secretly visits E621).

In past interviews with Cathy Weseluck, Lee Tockar, Tara Strong, and so on, they have said that when trying to become a v.a. that going to an acting class or two (or more I guess) is helpful but not necessary for becoming a better voice actor.

What kind of acting classes are they talking about? How long must one take them?

Choir, Drama, Acting all would support being able to make full use of your vocal range. I haven't heard anything about VA-specific classes, but I also wouldn't be suprised if they had some in places, but either of those three should help you build up your voice (Especially choir).

You have to know how to act. Theater and drama are the best classes for voice acting. Most of the time, your regular voice is not going to cut it.

I'm surprised none of the voice actors you listed said "I didn't want to become a voice actor - I just ended up as one."

Yes, acting classes and vocal coaching will help you hone your craft, but the best thing you can do as an actor is to go out and experience life. Acting is not faking. Even the most outlandish voices are grounded in actual emotions - they are experiencing a situation through their character's perspective, and reacting appropriately.

So if you want to start training, look up local theatre workshops or a community college if they offer that program. Try getting some singing under your belt to help project your voice.

As for the time commitment? Classes may only last a few months or so, but your learning doesn't end when the class does. Don't get the impression that you can take a class and suddenly know all there is to know about voice acting. Keep at it.

Well, since I've made this thread, I feel I need to clarify now. While I was away from the thread, I was looking up college courses, and other acting classes... but while they say what they teach in each course, I still don't know what to specialize in with acting classes.
