Get the app "CamScanner".
It is like a magic, it turns mobile-taken pics to a good-quality picture.

Try it once yourself.

I don't know, OP's post is really vague.

But I got from his post that his posts are getting flagged because he takes them by mobile????

they are just angry because i uploaded a png version of their jpg post and flagged the jpg for deletion. now they feel like its unfair because they cant post the best version with their phone.

Oh please, Don't start a new fight, You two!

When uploading from mobile, instead of picking a file on the uploader you can just put the direct image link (not the submission page) as the first. e621 will grab the image from the source itself.

not my fault if someone gets a bit too upset when their bad quality version of picture gets replaced with better version i posted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As an archive of sorts, it doesn't do well to upload inferior versions of images when better ones are readily available.

Parasprite told Aces to upload using direct links to images.

The tag histories of Aces' uploads suggest he posted with direct links, but when I check the source it ends up being higher in quality anyway.

https://e621.net/post/show/709832 was uploaded via direct link (No proper submission page source).

https://static1.e621.net/data/9c/a5/9ca5f29a512846f0f0f926922050ce71.jpg

Please tell me I'm not the only one who notices the slight difference in compression artifacts.

Even when Aces uploads using direct-links to PNGs, they're inexplicably replaced by JPGs upon posting.

post #675658. Uploaded via direct link, as the Tag History suggests, but was a JPG for some reason. Replaced by post #675771.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/61512916/675658-vs-675771.png

Such a thing seems to affect every one of his posts. JPG to lesser-JPG, and PNG to JPG.

Compare post #630034 to its source. Image is 247KB JPG, source is a 940KB JPG. There was a reduction in quality as it was posted to e621 even though he posted using direct links.

Maybe Aces is providing a direct-link source in addition to uploading saved images from his phone instead of just uploading using direct links alone.

I've relayed this to our devs to see if there is something that might be interfering with downloads. I'll let everybody know when I find out more info as to what might be going on.

My mobile network compresses images when I upload them anywhere using mobile data, could it be anything like that? If it's a direct link upload it really shouldn't do anything though.

Doing a little test on my phone.

Google Chrome
iPhone 5c / iOS 8.4.1
Verizon Wireless

Direct-link uploaded post #710652. PNG to PNG. Forgot to turn wifi off, though.

Direct-link uploaded post #710654. PNG to PNG. Used cellular data.

Uploaded post #710655 using image saved to phone. Using wifi as a control in case mobile network compresses images, as Tuvalu suggested. PNG to JPG over wifi. I confirmed that the image is still a PNG on my phone. So it means [the iOS version of] Chrome compresses images before uploading, not upon saving. (Tuvalu: it might be your phone, not your network.)

I guess Aces is just doing it wrong. Like I said above: Maybe Aces is providing a direct-link source in addition to uploading saved images from his phone, instead of just uploading using direct links alone. Direct uploads don't work if you provide a file, and it is likely his phone re-compresses saved images before uploading as well.

post #710626 was uploaded from a mobile device without giving a source at all (see tag history, so there is likely a degradation of quality there.

Also, the original description read "No longer giveing sources because of mobile uploaders have no rights to fist uploads and gets better quality from PC uploaders." Tsk tsk. Denying source and not crediting the artist because his cellphone butchers image quality. Crediting artists and giving sources is very important. It's essentially what differentiates reposting from thievery.

In the settings of Chrome there's a "Data Saver" option, it's enabled by default but I've had it disabled a while. I wonder if toggling that would change anything, I'll look for a PNG to upload to test it.

EDIT:
Google Chrome, Galaxy S4

Uploaded post #710754 from phone, PNG to PNG, data saver off.
Uploaded post #710759 from phone, PNG to PNG, data saver on.

It does not make a difference. It was OFF when I performed my little test above. I've always had that OFF.

It seems like it would only affect downloads, anyway.

Interesting that your upload wasn't converted. Though the iOS and Android versions of Chrome are quite different due to Apple's policy about requiring 3rd party browsers to use Safari's webkit framework.

I guess in one way or another, mobile devices and apps are too bandwidth-conscious to ensure lossless uploads by a means other than using direct links.

Recompression also makes it harder to find sources.

Take post #711356
It's a cub image with a width of 920 => it's a preview image from PedoBunny
But eSix Extend (InkBunny search) doesn't find it.

So I found it (second page of the search results) by searching PedoBunny for:

I think I found another user that uploads from a mobile device.

۩۞DragonKun۞۩
https://e621.net/user/show/202475

I've noticed all this user's uploads are reduced in quality from their originals.

A few examples:
https://e621.net/post/show/716933 (JPG whereas source is PNG)
https://twitter.com/ClawLion/status/614071310809837568/photo/1
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CIWemlGUwAIK-d-.png:orig

https://e621.net/post/show/715769 (JPG whereas source is PNG)
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=44084973

https://e621.net/post/show/715765 (Lower-resolution JPG whereas source is PNG)
https://twitter.com/harusuke299/status/574180353075646466
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B_fl_OlUwAArhkH.png:orig

https://e621.net/post/show/717012 (375kB JPG, more compression used)
https://e621.net/post/show/716981 (1200kB JPG, as found at the source)

I personally find this degradation in quality to be unacceptable. Perhaps the upload page should advise against uploading from mobile devices?

[EDIT: I asked DragonKun if he uses a mobile device. He told me he is uploading from a computer. So maybe he is using bad sources (rarely links to originals), or it's his service provider (doubtful?).]

Well I have a few mobile uploads and I don't believe they degraded in quality. I'm using a Moto G LTE (1st gen) on Android lollipop (5.1) and dolphin browser (with jetpack on now it works again). I downloaded the image from source and uploaded using the same browser.

Did your phone save it as the proper file type? It's possible that since five months ago they fixed that problem.

I didn't double check, but as far as I'm aware it did.
