Topic: Coloured edits and artist tags

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

This has been bugging me for a while now as there doesn't seem to be any set rules regarding this.

Compare the following:

colored edit arttags:1
colored edit arttags:2

There doesn't seem to be any consensus on whether a coloured edit of an image should have the colourer's artist tag applied to it. I have seen huge amounts of consistency, even in different pictures by identical line workers and colourers, and the wiki is of no help (edit only contains trivia, colored hasn't been edited since 2012).

So, I ask the following questions:

  • Should coloured edits include the colourer's name?
  • In what situations should an editor's artist tag be included?

Thanks.

It seems to me for an archive site, as e621 purports to be, there is only one suitable option here: Tag as much information as possible (ie. tag all edits of any kind with the editor's tag in addition to the original artist's tag).

Some people might say that for minor enough edits that that is unfair to the original artist. I would reply to that that fairness isn't the point, and the degree of editing can be clarified in the description or comments.

+1 for tagging the original artist as well as the editor. Occasionally an artist will dislike the edit and ask for that post to be taken down or to have their name removed it, which I think is okay.

See forum #157655.
Always tag the original artist. Editor is only tagged as an artist if there's significant changes. Never for simple uncensors and such.

That wiki needs an update badly, but really I hoped to nuke that tag a while ago but it's still kind of stuck in limbo (between "anything that is colored" by new taggers", color edits, and colored versions of grayscale art [by the artist]). . The more useful cousin of that tag is color_edit.

Depends. Like Genjar said we only tag for significant changes (enough to qualify as artistic by itself). For the artist tag I tend to like using artistname_(colorist), but not all of them are tagged that way.

Huh. The term "color_edit" suggests altered colours as opposed to added colours to me. But it appears that the general agreement is that coloured pictures should have the colourist's name (as well as the line worker's name) in those such situations.

"Adding colors" is altering them. Before it was black, white, or transparent, now it's something else. Therefore, edited.
