To be clear, I don't mean the generalized forms of these tags, such as fur. I'm wondering about tagging specific body colors such as white_fur, green_body, blue_skin, etc.

I wasn't sure which of these tags to use for certain situations. More specifically, in cases with a feral, anthro, or anthrofied character/species that would normally have fur, but it isn't readily apparent that it is fur.

For these I'm not sure whether white_skin or white_fur would be considered appropriate for Shining Armor since normally it be tagged as fur for this character/species but the body appears smooth like skin in the picture, or if white_body would be more appropriate since it is rather ambiguous in the picture itself.

Tags like white body can always be used as a fallback when lacking information about the character in question.

When you can see that it's fur (with a tuft or the like) you tag it with x_fur.

It isn't followed very consistently though, unfortunately.

It's especially bad for the ponies, because someone went and tag scripted several characters with <color>_fur tags. Regardless of the content. I doubt that those will ever be cleared, there's just too many tens of thousands of them mistagged.

White_skin for the left one (the whole body looks smooth, and you can see the navel/nipples/etc), white_fur for right (toony artstyle, but you can see a tuft of fur).

There's also the less common [color]_scales and [color]_feathers.

Maybe it'd just be easier if all these were put under one [color]_body tag?

Perhaps. But then we'd have to tag fur, feathers, and such manually. Under the current system those get implicated from the color tags (white_fur -> fur, etc).

Not sure which would require less work in the long run.

I like the fur/scales/feathers system better. I used to just tag skin before I learned of them, though.

The thing that always sticks out for me is the use of scales vs skin.

I'll use spyro as an example.

he is also tagged with purple scales. This one I'm not so sure of. The texture of the purple section of his body appears very smooth, and there are no details depicting the presence of scales.
Shouldn't this one be tagged with purple skin?

That one looks ambiguous, there's not enough detail to tell either way. In such cases, <color>_body is the best fit.

Personally, I'd say that with characters like Spyro, if they're in their canon body form, it should go with what it's supposed to be, but that's not TWYS.

Uploaded a certainly chitinous image and tagged colors for color_chitin, and noticed that such tags aren't actually used? I feel like they'd be a good set of tags to use, though it would involve possibly going through the list of primaries to imply, then. The biggest ones would probably be black and red, since insects often have black chitin, and crabs red.

I would assume most of that is currently tagged under *_body or *_scales (if at all).

Chitin is just one component of the exoskeleton, so tagging those as color_exoskeleton would be more accurate.

Insects are rather rare on this site, so I think it might suffice to tag them as <color>_body + exoskeleton. There's already hundred posts under that tag, though a couple have been tagged for cyborgs and such...:

This is what I do for the relative texture tags as well
