I could see it being used for a "tag" object, like a toe tag, or price tag etc.
Or, for people playing a game of tag.

Tag needs a disambiguation, I'd say.
tag_(purchase), tag_(game), and tag_(id) are what I can think of.

Because dog tags are usually in pairs.
Oh. I did not know that.

- collar_tag, name_tag, tag, dog_tags - We should be able to combine most of these into something. The "name tag for a pet" is a common enough occurrence here that it could definitely be lumped into a single tag. I'd say use name_tag, but there isn't always a name (it can be just a symbol like with Housepets!) but collar_tag would probably work in most cases.
Parasprite, we need to talk.
Dog tags are not what pets wear.
Unless you know any Catholic dogs.

Due to the potential for confusion because there's so many different types of tags, I'd recommend aliasing tag to invalid_tag, thereby requiring the tag on the sidebar to be specific about what sort of tag is in the image.
- ear_tag - That shape thing they put on cattle to track them.
Also on wildlife and other animals for the same reason. Basically, a tag-like object stuck to the ear without being an earring. Should also implicate ear_piercing.
- spell_tag - I have no idea, but whatever it is Genjar tagged them and he'd probably know.
Basically, it's a slip of paper with writing on it that's supposed to cast or counter magic spells or repel the supernatural. It's common in Japanese anime and manga when dealing with supernatural and paranormal themes.
- Tag - The game where people run around and try to touch each other for entertainment purposes.
- Tag - As in putting graffiti on something. (only one under tag_(graffiti)
- Tag(s) - A license plate in America.
- Tag - A small benign tumor ("skin tag")
I think they should be retagged appropriately to reduce confusion, the first as tag_(game), the second as graffiti, the third as license_plate, and the fourth as skin_tag.
- Tag - Our tags, the best kind of tag. (there's a few meta-tag tags under tag now)
The meta-tags by themselves are enough, I'd think.
- collar_tag, name_tag, tag - We should be able to combine most of these into something. The "name tag for a pet" is a common enough occurrence here that it could definitely be lumped into a single tag. I'd say use name_tag, but there isn't always a name (it can be just a symbol like with Housepets!) but collar_tag would probably work in most cases.
An argument could be made that names needn't be written out as words, but could be represented by one or more pictures (hieroglyphics and cutie_marks, for example) or even a smell (as mentioned in the webcomic "Freefall"), although the latter is a bit hard to realize with current computing systems.

How about aliasing it to tag_(disambiguation) instead of invalidating it?
It has so many meanings and gets, um, tagged so often that it'd likely be the best way to keep those sorted.
As for spell_tag... Well, that's not really the proper name for it. But it's what Pokemon calls those and the other names are either too obscure or too generic (see http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PaperTalisman).

We're going into some tag-inception here.
