Topic: anime and manga tags

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

What is purpose of these two tags? Their wiki entries (anime, manga) are generic and they have almost no implications.

Should they be used similarly to video_games, so it would be used for characters from anime and manga? If that's the case then many implications are needed (like pokemon -> anime; pokemon -> manga; etc.) and implication manga -> comic is incorrect and needs to be removed.

Should manga tag be used for japanese comics like implication suggest? (forum #50784) Then video_games tag is inconsistent with this and what to do with anime tag? Imply it to animated and use it for japanese_animations?

I don't think those can be tagged the same way as video_games. Simply because there's so much overlap with anime and manga: original series are rare, anime is often adapted from manga. So most characters would end up with both tags.

There's a lot of posts tagged as manga that aren't comics (or Japanese), so the implication to comic should be removed. And anime seems to be mostly tagged for posts that are anime-style, but are neither animated nor actual anime.

Hrm. Based on the current usage, I'd suggest invalidating both.

I think some are just from people copying tags tbh. The amount of overlap with the two is pretty low though surprisingly. I think curating them would be better than aliasing if possible. They do have a style that I know people don't like (even if they aren't always tagged properly).

My current thoughts (feel free to throw them out):

______________________________________________________

Definitions:

  • Manga: Japanese-styled comics
  • Anime: Japanese-styled animation

______________________________________________________

Option 1

Benefits: Anime would become a broader tag that encompasses all art that has this style.
Drawbacks: Manga isn't technically anime, even if it it is sometimes used that way.
______________________________________________________

Option 2

Benefits: Same as above.
Drawbacks: The line between manga and comic is even more confusing.

Opinion: To be honest, I would chose option 1 over option 2. I think manga should be left for those that are solely comics.
______________________________________________________

Option 3

Benefits: Less confusing to deal with, leave comic for people who tag comic.
Drawbacks: Manga isn't technically anime.
______________________________________________________

Option 4

Benefits: Least confusing, we have a bit more leeway for definitions, things labeled both go to the right place. We don't have much (if any) anime that is actually animated, so it makes more sense to sever definitional baggage.
Drawbacks: It may end up a bit more broad than intended (e.g., anything with kanji ends up with the tag), arguments about what should be considered "Japanese".

Opinion: I'm thinking something along these lines would be the best option. If we wanted to, we could even use a tag like japanese_style_comic for manga, leaving manga as the shorthand version.

______________________________________________________

Option 5

Benefits: Probably the most accurate while also being the least likely to be mistagged.
Drawbacks: Probably at least slightly offensive.

Same. They're not very useful. We already have a comic tag for sequential art, so we don't need manga for that. A LOT of furry art is anime inspired, so using anime to tag anime style art would be difficult because of the many overlapping cases, plus its very subjective, and honestly wouldn't end up being too useful. We don't tag art styles anyway, again because theyre super subjective and every artist is so different these days. Tagging anime style comics with manga falls into the same trap. Implicating things like Pokemon to anime would be a mistake, since there's a lot of non anime Pokemon art out there, even if the original series was an anime.
I could go on, there are a lot of problems with these tags, and I can see why they aren't used much.
