Based on this text from the watermark Wiki:

A watermark is a small emblem, logo or signature of the artist who drew the image.

EDIT: The tag implication signature -> watermark (forum #186746) has been rejected by @Millcore.

Signatures aren't always watermarks, though. If it's over the image, then yes, it is, but if it's off to the corner or between panels, then it's not.

I think they still are. They are on the image after all. If you lookup the general definition of "watermark," you will find things similar to this:

Watermark - a faint design made in some paper during manufacture that is visible when held against the light and typically identifies the maker.

We should either enter the implication, or alter the watermark Wiki.

Watermarks are more or less transparent, aren't they? The signatures I've come across are handwritten (such as from nightfaux), not a logo an artist has made to stick on the corner or center of an image (such as latiar).

I would vouch for altering the watermark Wiki as well.

watermark on digital art is a transparent text on the drawing. signature is not always transparent. so sometimes signatures are watermarks but not always.

Sometimes I am in conflict with myself whether I should add the watermark or signature tag when a signature really looks like a watermark (like a written name).

If the signature is splashed over the image, then it gets both tags.

The current wiki entry is (was) inaccurate.

Watermark should only be tagged if it's drawn over the content. And as mentioned, watermarks are often logos and such. Normal signatures off in some corner have nothing to do with the tag.
